In a landmark decision, the French parliament passed a law to protect the rural soundscape, stating that people who choose to live near existing farms, shops, bars, or restaurants cannot file noise complaints.

French Justice Minister Éric Dupond-Moretti emphasized the importance of respecting the established way of life in rural areas, stating that newcomers must adjust to the sounds and smells of country living.

“Those who move to the countryside cannot demand that the country people who feed them change their way of life,” Dupond-Moretti said last year when the law was first proposed in 鶹APP.

“What should be done? Sedate them? If you don’t like the countryside, you stay in the city, and if you go to the countryside you adapt to the countryside as it is already.”

The legislation, supported by French MP Nicole Le Peih and Dupond-Moretti, aims to reduce the burden on courts that are inundated with noise complaints, primarily from urban transplants seeking peace and quiet in rural areas.

“It’s not a blank cheque for all neighborhood disturbances, but a common sense measure,” Le Peih told The Guardian.

While supporters hailed the new law as a victory for rural communities, critics such as Socialist MP Gérard Leseul contended that it simply reiterates existing principles without making significant changes.
