It is good news for everyone who will be using the Barcelona Airport, as they will take less than 4 minutes to go through the luggage check before they embark on their flight.

In only three and a half minutes, each piece of baggage passes through the first level of the automated EDS control, from where it is distributed to the handling company, which delivers the baggage to the cargo holds of the aircraft.

The new automatic baggage control system at Barcelona Airport’s Terminals 1 and 2 was installed more than eight months ago. It has enabled 80% of the suitcases to pass through the new system without any problems, a significant improvement over the previous system, which had a success rate of only 50%.

Sheila Muñoz, head of the Special Installations Department at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport, told Catalan News that the new security system possesses a 99.9% reliability rate, making it virtually impossible for a passenger’s baggage to get lost.

In the previous system, baggage handlers were stationed just behind the check-in counters and manually handled the passengers’ bags.

At the moment, the Automated Baggage Transport System (SATE) checks and distributes the baggage by itself after it passes through security.

The SATE installation features a total of twelve screening machines that use the most advanced CT scanning system, similar to the one used in the medical field. 

This is part of Aena’s 15-step action plan to modernize Terminal 2, an initiative launched in 2021.

The new system meets the requirements of the new EU regulations for the Explosive Detection System (EDS), Standard 3, while also improving baggage screening and ensuring a more fluid baggage handling process, according to the Spanish airport management company, Aena.

With the new system in place, promising efficiency and speed for passengers, the airport operations in Barcelona will be something most will marvel at.

The long airport queues will remain a thing of the past with this new baggage solution.
