2. LPV Ristorante & Bistrot

Created by Max Alajmo and carried out by executive chefs Silvio Giavedoni and Sergio Preziosa, the Ristorante Quadri menu highlights contemporary interpretations of traditional Venetian and Italian dishes made with ingredients sourced directly from the Venetian lagoon. 5. Il Ridotto

The name Il Ridotto is inspired by the Ridotto Theatre, a small and old Venetian theatre. Like this theatre, Il Ridotto Restaurant is a small and elegant gourmet restaurant, with only 9 tables. 11. L’Osteria di Santa Marina

12. Amo

Situated within the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, once a type of stock exchange where merchants from northern Europe traded with their Venetian counterparts and now a luxury shopping centre for those in search of high-end brands, Amo is the trendiest of the Alajmo group’s restaurants. 

Gourmet yet casual in style, the restaurant boasts an internal courtyard setting and lounge-style decor by Philippe Starck. The view of the Grand Canal and the rooftops of Venice from the top-floor terrace is stunning. Reservations are highly recommended.

The airy and bright restaurant overlooks a beautiful canal in the area of Castello, a short walk away from the Biennale of Art and from St Mark’s Square. The interiors have been crafted by local artisans, from the terrazzo floor with 3500 glass murrinas in it, to the tables, chairs and the beautiful wine cellar handmade by Remo Pasquini. Guests can see the chefs at work in the open kitchen. 

The stories behind the dishes are rooted in the tradition and projected into the future. 15. Hostaria da Franz

Founded in a different venue by an Austrian soldier in the late 19C, this historic Venetian restaurant is now run by owner Maurizio, who oversees the front of the house in a courteous yet friendly manner. Arva is Aman’s tribute to Italy’s rich culinary heritage, an inventive and sustainable approach to cooking using the finest ingredients of the season. Its name is taken from the Latin term for ‘cultivated land’, a reflection of the kitchen’s philosophy of making the best of land and sea.

Dine surrounded by a decor of stucco and paintings or alfresco overlooking the Grand Canal in this highly luxurious restaurant. 19. Corte Sconta

21. Ai Gondolieri

A few steps from the Salute Church and the Accademia Gallery, Ai Gondoliers reworks the local food culture through healthy and delicious eating. Its origin dates back to the early decades of the ‘900 as a meeting place for residents and workers in the area, as its insignia in 40 years’ characters protected as a historic landmark by the city of Venice.

The place was then an old inn to eat simple meals, drink a glass of wine and play cards, while today the current owner, Giovanni Trevisan, in 1987 has restored respect to its identity and created an art meeting place culinary and gracious hospitality. 27. Glam Enrico Bartolini

35. Venissa

Venissa is situated in a magical setting which is perfect for a short stroll before settling down to eat. In addition to the Dorona di Venezia vineyard, the restaurant also has a kitchen garden which provides most of its vegetables, including unusual varieties such as castraure, a type of local artichoke. Once out of the garden, you come to a small wooden bridge which links Mazzorbo to neighbouring Burano, where you can complete your visit to the lagoon by exploring the lacemakers’ shops and admiring the colourful local houses. 

The main focus here, however, is the cuisine. Chefs Chiara Pavan and Francesco Brutto describe their dishes as environmental because of the close connection between the lagoon and the Upper Adriatic: the menu features plenty of fish and vegetables and almost no meat. Guests choose their number of courses and the dishes come as a surprise, accompanied by organic wine pairings. At the Osteria Contemporanea next door, the dishes are simpler but still full of flavour.
