The Pelley Murders was a quadruple murder incident that took place on 30th April 1989 in Lakeville, Indiana. Reverend Bob Pelley, his wife Dawn Pelley, and their two children Janel and Jolene were brutally murdered. The murders were discovered the following morning by parishioners who went to the Pelley’s house after they failed to appear for a church service.

Jeff Pelley, the 17-year-old son of Bob and stepson of Dawn Pelley, was the primary suspect in the murder case of his family. Jeff had been upset that evening after his father had grounded him for getting into trouble at school. Before this incident, the teenager had also been arguing with Dawn, his stepmother.

He was told that he would not drive his Ford Mustang to Prom night which contributed to him killing his family. Jeff allegedly shot his father, stepmother, and two stepsisters with a shotgun before cleaning up the crime scene and taking a shower.

1. The Victims of the Pelley Murders were Four Family Members

On 30th April 1989, the residents and police in Lakeville, Indiana were shocked by the worst encounter of a quadruple murder incident. Two adults and two children had been brutally shot dead in their home. Renowned Reverend Bob Pelley and his family were the victims of this murder. The Reverend was murdered alongside his wife, Dawn Pelley, and their two daughters, 8-year-old Janel and 6-year-old Jolene.

2. Reverend Bob & His Wife Were Widows Who Married Each Other

Reverend Bob Pelley was a widow who used to live with his son, Jeff, and daughter, Jacque. On the other hand, Dawn was also a widow who had decided to marry the Reverend. She had three daughters Jessie, Janel, and Jolene who were taken in as the couple’s children. The two decided to unify their families by adopting the children of one another.

3. The Pelley Family Were the Opposite of a Happy Family Known at their Church

After marrying each other and deciding to adopt each other’s children, several members of their church thought they were a happy family. On Sundays, the family could go to church and pose as very happy which was the opposite of what they were at home. The Pelley Family was struggling with some disunity while at home.

The community believed that the Pelly Home was a perfect one with how they were seen in public. However, the family faced several problems at home that threatened their unity. Jacque believed that Dawn used to oppress them as young girls at home.

5. Jeff Got Involved in Trouble While in Senior High School

During the spring of 1989, 17-year-old Jeff Pelley was a senior high school student. Like other old-school boys, Jeff started getting into trouble with what he wanted for himself.

His father tried to discipline and mold him into a morally upright lad, but his efforts were futile at other times. Jeff was involved in trouble including petty theft of stealing CDs and money from neighbouring homes.

6. Bob Punished Jeff by Preventing Him from Prom Night

Troubled Jeff Pelley had to be disciplined properly by his father who did not want his reputation to be tattered in the public. He choose one of the worst punishments that no senior high school student could ever wish for. Jeff was prevented from attending prom night which he had highly anticipated to.

Other than being prevented to attend prom night activities, Bob ensured that he had punished Jeff properly. Jeff had a Ford Mustang which he used to go around with and his punishment involved it. He was forbidden from driving the Ford Mustang with his father offering transportation wherever he wanted to go.

8. Bob’s Son was Enraged & Threatened His Family

After being grounded by stated his father, Jeff was a frustrated young lad. What made him even more angry was that he could miss the final prom night of senior high school.

Jeff was enraged as any other high school senior would be after missing the most anticipated night of the year. He screamed at his father and made the standard threat of leaving and never returning.

9. Jeff’s Classmate Testified on Feeling the Tension at Pelley’s Home The Night of the Murders

Even though Jeff was grounded for any prom activities, he was allowed to attend the final ceremony. On 29th April 1989, Jeff’s classmate, Kim Oldenburg went to the Pelley’s house alongside her mother and date before prom.

She later testified that when they were at the Pelley’s home, she sensed something was odd. Kim revealed that she felt a great tension and Jeff was angry and sullen.

10. The Pelley’s Neighbour Sensed Something was Wrong at the Home before the Murders were Discovered

At around six o’clock that same evening, one of the Pelley’s neighbors was left in shock at how the home was. As the neighbor was mowing his lawn, he noticed the curtains at the Pelley’s house were drawn tightly. He also noticed that the basement light was still burning after nine o’clock that evening which was a strange thing. The turn of events took place way before the murders were discovered.

11. Bob’s Congregants became Concerned after Their No-show at Church

The next day was a Sunday. When worshippers arrived at the church at 9:30 a.m., they found Pastor Bob and his family were not there. When the time for services came and went, people began to speculate on possible explanations for the pastor’s absence. Some parishioners realized something was seriously wrong and went next door to check on the pastor and his family.

12. The Reverend was Found Lying Dead in the Hallway

With the concern about the whereabouts of the Pelley Family, the congregants decided to go to the family home and check out for them. On arriving at the Pelley’s home, they found the weird scene of the tightly closed curtains. They tried to peek through, but could not see anything.

Will Tisdale decided to use the home’s spare key and check out only to stumble on the shocking scene. Reverend Bob Pelley was found lying dead in the hallway. His body had clear marks of gunshot wounds.

13. Dawn’s, Janel’s & Jolene’s Bodies were Found in the Basement

After finding the body of Bob Pelley in the hallway, the police were contacted immediately. The other people present decided to check out the well-being of the other family members. In the basement, the bodies of Dawn Pelley and their two daughters, Janel and Jolene were found.

14. Dawn’s Body was Coiled Around the Girl’s Bodies

The state in which the bodies of the three were found in the basement was touching. Dawn’s body was found coiled around the bodies of Janel and Jolene. The scene clearly showed that she was trying to protect her daughters.

16. Three of the Pelley’s Children were Missing but Were Found Later

After discovering the four bodies of the Pelley Family, there were concerns about the whereabouts of the other three children of the Pelleys. Jeff, Jacque, and Jessie were not found in their home which raised major suspicion.

The investigators and first responders thought that the three Pelley Children had been kidnapped. However, the three missing children were retraced. Jacque had visited a friend far away in college, Jessie was at their neighbor’s home for that night and Jeff was on a class trip.

17. Jeff Denied Any Involvement in the Pelley Murders

As investigations went on, the police started looking for clues that might lead them to the suspect. It was believed that it was an inside job as there was no break-into the house. Jeff was the main suspect because he had a bad relationship with his father.

As he was being interrogated, Jeff denied being involved in the murders of his family. He maintained his innocence that he had made peace with his father. Jeff had also revealed that he had been allowed to drive his car to Prom.

18. The Pelley Murders Remained Unsolved for the Next 13 Years

The investigations of the Pelley Murders were proving tricky to crack in the beginning of studies. Jeff denied any involvement in the murders leaving the authorities with no leads. This made the case remain unsolved for the next thirteen years since the murders took place.

19. Jeff’s Pair of Blue Jeans were the Major Piece of Evidence

A pair of blue jeans served as the major piece of evidence in the case. Jeff Pelley and his attorneys claimed that prosecutors lied to jurors during the first trial when they said Jeff’s jeans were discovered in the washing machine and, presumably, sanitized to destroy evidence.

20. Jeff Pelley was Handed a 160 Years Sentence

13 years after the Pelley Murders remained unsolved, persons of interest came forward and wanted to get justice. On Friday 21st July 2006, Jeff was taken for trial again for the Pelley Murders. He was found guilty of murdering his family. Jeff Pelley was handed 40 years for each murder which totaled 160 years sentence in October 2006.

 

Jeff Pelley is currently serving 160 years of jail time even though he is claiming that he is innocent. This year, 2023, Jeff has tried to appeal his sentencing.
