Signal Mountain Murders: 15 Facts About The Unsolved Mystery


 

The Signal Mountain murders were a series of killings that involved three people. 22-year-old Airman First Class Kenneth Griffith, 23-year-old Sergeant Earl Smock, and his 49-year-old father-in-law, Richard Mason were the victims. The three were murdered and their bodies were dumped at Signal Mountain.

On the evening of 9th July 1988, the trio had left home to ride their ATVs on the Signal Mountain trails near Chattanooga, Tennessee. Martha Mason, Richard’s wife recalled that the trio had wanted to go out even before the sun had set. They left home and unfortunately, they never returned which raised an alarm.

The friends and families of the three set off to search for them only to find their dirt bikes abandoned in an area known as The Gate. The search area broadened after missing the bodies of the victims which were later found dumped several miles away. They had been shot dead and dumped away.

Investigations began immediately with 55-year-old Frank Casteel being arrested. Several witness accounts placed Frank on the murder scene that night. 

Previously, Casteel had been touted for threatening people with a shotgun when they came trespassed on his property. Some of the threatened people were couples who were celebrating their wedding anniversaries. 

Before being arrested, several witnesses gave their accounts about suspecting Frank being the killer. The majority stated that they heard the gunshots which Frank and his wife claimed not to have heard. One of the witnesses had been given a ride on Frank’s vehicle which had been washed and had some traces of blood.

He tried to defend himself, but the shotgun that was used in the murders was recovered. Casteel was arrested and charged with triple homicide. He was convicted for the triple homicide, and released in 2001, but convicted again in 2003 and died in prison in 2019 at the age of 71.

1. Three Men were Victims of the Murders

2. The Victims had Gone to Ride their ATVs before it was Dark

On that evening of 9th July 1988, the trio had plans of going out before it became dark. Kenneth, Earl, and Richard had plans of riding their ATVs along the trails near Chattanooga, Tennessee. However, this was never a good idea for the trio as they never knew what was going to happen to them.

3. The Trio Failed to Return Raising Concerns about their safety

Martha Mason, Richard’s wife recalled that the trio were experienced ATV riders. Two of them had ridden to and from the Tennessee backwoods several times before their last time. That evening, they never returned home as expected.

This came out as a red flag with concerns growing among their families. Their failure to return made the families and friends of the three head out to search for them not knowing what to expect.

4. A Local Discovered Three ATVs Covered in Blood During the Search Mission

The search for Kenneth, Earl, and Richard began immediately, with some friends, families, and residents helping to find them. Their trail covered a long distance through the trail that the ATVs normally rode through.

As the search continued on Roberts Camp Road, 5 miles from the Mason home, a resident got a bad tire which led to an important discovery. After hopping out of his vehicle, he went to look into a trash dump where he discovered the ATVs. The three ATVs were dumped at the bottom of a bluff while covered with blood.

5. A Signal Mountain Resident Recalled Hearing Gunshots the Previous Night Of the Incident

After the discovery of the ATVs with blood, more crucial details started emerging. A resident of Signal Mountain made a crucial report on what they had heard the night before. The resident stated that they heard gunshots the previous night at an area known as “the gate”.

6. More Blood Trail was Discovered in a Private Area with No Trespassing Signs

The important details from the resident of Signal Mountain helped investigators head in the right direction where the bodies were. The investigators approached “the gate”, a location with no trespassing signs.

In this area, they found ATV tire tracks on the ground which indicated that Kenneth and the other two had gone through. More blood trail was also discovered as one investigator noticed a green fly which indicated that there was decaying flesh nearby.

7. A Pool of Blood, Bone Fragments, and Brain Tissues were Discovered in the Area

The investigating team also noticed a speck of blood on a fallen tree branch a short distance just off the road. They also discovered what seemed to be drag marks on the ground nearby. Later, the investigators also discovered a pool of blood that had been concealed by some leaves.

Kenneth’s pocketknife was also discovered on the ground nearby. The location near “the gate” was certain to be the crime scene, according to investigators. At the scene, brain matter and bone fragments were also discovered.

8. The Bodies were Found 11 Miles from the Crime Scene

The search for the remains of the trio intensified after the shocking discovery of blood, bone fragments, and brain matter. Investigators’ discovery was followed by a wide and intense search for the remains of Kenneth, Earl, and Richard.

After two days, the bodies of the three were found. They had been dumped eleven miles away from the crime scene, the gate.

9. The Trio had been Killed by Shotgun Blasts

The discovery of the bodies led to the revelation of what had caused their deaths. Investigators had a tough time collecting evidence from a scattered and large crime scene area.

It was discovered that the trio had been murdered by shotgun blasts. Their bodies were then dumped by Suck Creek Road, three miles north of the Mason home, and eleven miles away from the actual crime scene.

10. Kenneth was Shot First, Richard Next & Earl Last as He Attempted to Flee

According to Unsolved Mysteries Wiki, Kenneth was thought to have been shot first, in the left side of the head. Richard was the next victim, having been shot once in the chest. Earl was the last to die; he was shot in the right shoulder while attempting to flee. However, the killer caught up with him and shot him through his heart.

11. The Killer Covered Up the Crime Scene and disposed of the Evidence with the Help of an Accomplice

As investigations continued, crucial details from the Signal Mountain Murders were being made. The investigators believed that the killer had carefully covered up the crime scene so that it could not be discovered earlier.

He then disposed of the other evidence that could lead to him either the help of an accomplice because the work was a lot. The ATVs were first disposed of then the bodies were taken from the crime scene and dumped.

12. Investigators Believed the Killer Wanted the Bodies to be Found First

Investigators believed that the perpetrator wanted the bodies to be uncovered first to avoid the actual crime scene from being discovered. The killer believed that if the bodies had been discovered on Monday rather than Wednesday, the crime scene at “the gate” would not have been discovered.

Investigators became more confident that the murderer was a local. The residents of Signal Mountain grew concerned that the murderer was a member of their little community, this is according to a news report by WTVC.

13. Eye Witnesses Gave Key Details that Led to the Arrest of the Suspect

An eyewitness reported seeing two males in a pickup truck on Roberts Mill Road the same night the men vanished. He noticed three ATVs in the back. At the same time as the truck was noticed, another witness observed a woman desperately attempting to stop traffic near Roberts Mill Road.

She informed the witness that there was an accident on the road. She was driving a white Chevrolet. This sighting happened about a quarter mile away from the bluff where the ATVs were located.

Investigators then suspected that the assailant was a local. He and his accomplice(s) seemed to have been well-versed on Signal Mountain’s back roads. They also knew the best places to dump ATVs and bodies. The eyewitnesses’ details helped in the arrest of the suspect.

14. The Suspect was Found with a Record of People Who Had Trespassed His Property

On 15 April 1997, 55-year-old Frank Casteel was arrested and charged with the triple murders. This is when more details about Frank were revealed. Several witnesses testified against him and stated that he had threatened them after finding them on his property near “the gate” and the “blue hole.” It was also discovered that he had kept a journal of his encounters with trespassers, frequently requiring them to sign it before releasing them.

15. The Trio is Believed to have Gone Swimming before being Confronted & Murdered

Another shocking detail about the Signal Mountain Murders was what the three men had gone to do before they were murdered. Investigators believed that they had gone to a swimming hole, the “blue hole”. However, they were cornered on this property, confronted, and then murdered.

 

Frank Casteel was convicted of the murders and sentenced to life in prison in May 1998. After it was decided that some of the evidence should not have been entered, he was given a new trial; however, he was convicted again during the second trial in 2003. He died in prison on 25th May 2019, at the age of 71.
