2. Adamjee Group

The Adamjee Group of Companies is an internationally recognized group of organizations. It consists of several companies in various industries.

This includes textiles, real estate, energy, education, health care, retail, and insurance among others. Some of the biggest companies in the group include Ad Power, Adamjee Pharmaceuticals, Adamjee Engineering, and Sahara Buying Services among others.

It was founded in 1896 by entrepreneur and businessman Abdul Adamjee Haji Dawood. Based in Karachi, Pakistan, the Adamjee Group has expanded its operations across multiple countries, including UAE, Oman, Bahrain, and the United States.

3. Habib Bank

Abbreviated as HBL, Habib Bank Limited multinational bank based in Karachi, Pakistan. It was founded in 1941 by the Habib family who are behind the international conglomerate, House of Habib.

It is famous for being ʲ쾱ٲ’s oldest, largest, and first commercial bank. The bank’s first international branch was opened in 1951 in Sri Lanka in South East Asia.

It has grown significantly over the years with branches in China, Switzerland, UAE, Mauritius, Bahrain, Bangladesh, and many other countries. The Pakistani government sold its shares in the bank in 2015 and now the majority of the company is owned by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (51%).

4. Allied Bank Limited

Allied Bank Limited is a Pakistani commercial bank with an international pedigree for its expertise in the financial world. It is the fifth-largest commercial bank in Pakistan.

Recognized as the first Muslim bank, its history dates all the way back to 1942. It was founded by Khawaja Bashir Baksh and at the time it was known as Australasia Bank Limited.

It was renamed in 1974 following the lucrative merger with Sarhad Bank Ltd, Lahore Commercial Bank Ltd, and Pak Bank Ltd. Today, ABL has transformed into a multifaceted banking entity that offers a wide range of services such as commercial banking, investment banking, and retail banking operating not only within the borders of Pakistan.

5. MCB Bank

Based in Punjab, the MCB is a multinational Pakistani commercial bank. T was founded in 1946 by the Adamjee conglomerate (discussed above).

The bank was nationalized in 1974 by the national government hence the Adamjee Group lost control. It was later privatized under the control of the Nishat Group.

Currently, the Nishat Group alongside Malaysian bank Maybank, owns the largest share of the bank. Before 2005, it was known as the Muslim Commercial Bank and officially changed to MCB Bank.

6. Askari Bank

The Askari Bank is a prominent financial institution and commercial bank. It was founded in October 1991 and owes its name to the prestigious Askari Group, a conglomerate with roots in the Pakistani Armed Forces.

It was founded in 1965 as a fertilizer company. The company was known as Exxon before it was renamed Engro Chemical Pakistan Limited in 1991.

The company was founded in 1976 when the Pakistani government merged two oil companies, Premier Oil Company Limited and State Oil Company Limited. Thus, PSO was born.

Some of its most famous fertilizers include DAP, Urea, Zinc, SOP, and MOP. Its products are marketed as “Sona” which is an Urdu word translating to “gold”.
