Theranos Chairman, CEO and Founder Elizabeth Holmes (L) and TechCrunch Writer and Moderator Jonathan Shieber speak onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt by TechCrunch –
Yes, I left the juiciest for last! Theranos is a great example of why biotech companies need to be scrutinized intensely.
Aiming to revolutionize blood testing, Elizabeth Holmes founded Theranos in 2003. She claimed to have a proprietary device that could perform multiple tests using only a small amount of blood from a finger prick.
She quickly caught the attention of major investors and Theranos began with an initial $9 billion valuation. All was well and good until 2015 when news broke that the device was a myth and she had falsified her results.
The company closed in 2018 and Holmes among other involved parties was charged with multiple counts of Fraud. In 2022 she was found guilty of 4 counts of fraud and handed a 20-year prison sentence. Theranos serves as a cautionary tale in the biotech industry. It highlights the importance of transparency and rigorous scientific validation.
This is list is in no way exhaustive as there are numerous biotech companies. However, decisions had to be made and these are some we consider the most famous. While many of these companies have achieved great success, there have been controversies along the way, such as the infamous Theranos scandal. It is crucial that these companies maintain transparency and accountability to build trust with their consumers and stakeholders. With the potential to positively impact millions of lives, the biotech industry must continue to innovate while also remaining ethical and transparent.
