Americans gather nationwide to pay tribute and honor the sacrifices of military personnel
In honor of the brave men and women who gave their lives while serving their nation, Americans from coast to coast come together on Memorial Day to remember them. This yearly commemoration, which is celebrated on the final Monday in May, serves as a moving reminder of the bravery, devotion, and steadfast dedication of the fallen heroes who valiantly protected the country’s beliefs and liberties.
As the name suggests, Memorial Day is a day to honor the memory of the troops who gave their lives while defending the country. On May 30, 1868, the day was first celebrated across the country. John A. Logan, the Grand Army of the Republic’s commander in chief, proclaimed the holiday, then known as Decoration Day, in honor of Union troops who had died in the Civil War.
The National Cemetery Administration, a division of the Department of Veterans Affairs, gave Mary Ann Williams credit for the “idea of strewing the graves of Civil War soldiers Union and Confederate” in 2022. May 30th has been commemorated as Memorial Day for a long time. But in 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which put Memorial Day on the final Monday in May to provide federal workers a three-day weekend. Later, in 1971, it became a federal holiday.
