Amsterdam, a city celebrated for its rich history and lively culture, has always welcomed diversity, promoting inclusivity and unity among its residents. Recently, an initiative called “Becoming an Amsterdammer” proposed by the city鈥檚 branch of the PvdA Labour Party stirred a buzz. The project proposes that Expats in Amsterdam should undergo a course in 鈥渂ecoming an Amsterdammer鈥�, which would include language, history and culture lessons, and meetings with people who have 鈥渓ived in the city for longer鈥�.

According to The PvdA,  the motion has been prompted by changes in the city鈥檚 population make-up, in which international workers and students account for most of the growth, and which 鈥渢hreatens social cohesion鈥�.The Party’s claims come against the backdrop of findings of a recent study in February 2024 by CBS where it was revealed that the native Dutch have become more segregated since 2009, even though the population has become more diverse. Mayor Femke Halsema made news when she told 鈥渆xpats鈥� to get out of their bubble. “. Therefore it is suggested that there is a collective effort by the City to create an environment where everyone feels valued and respected regardless of their background.

Experts like Leo Lucassen acknowledge the importance of initiatives like “Becoming an Amsterdammer” in fostering social cohesion and cultural exchange. Locals also appreciate the program, recognizing it as a bridge between cultures and a celebration of Amsterdam’s rich heritage. Amsterdam’s past is a colourful tapestry of stories of migration spanning centuries. The city has welcomed and celebrated various communities, from Sephardic Jews seeking sanctuary to Surinamese and Indonesian communities adding their unique flavours. This has shaped the city into the vibrant multicultural hub it is today.

The cultural diversity of the city can be seen in its neighbourhoods such as the De Pijp and Oud-West, where different nationalities coexist harmoniously. These areas offer a glimpse into the city’s multicultural society, with vibrant markets, eateries, and cultural events. There are also vibrant events like the annual King’s Day (Koningsdag) an orange-filled celebration that is held annually for the king’s birthday on 27 April. Such cultural festivals showcase music, art, and cuisine from around the world. These events highlight Amsterdam’s spirit of inclusivity and cultural exchange.

As the city continues to embrace diversity,  the “Becoming an Amsterdammer” initiative is seen as an invitation to accept the “Amsterdam mentality”  which is seen as key to becoming a true Amsterdammer.
