St. Patrick’s Day is unquestionably the most important holiday in the eyes of many Irish citizens. In fact, it is a national holiday in Ireland. However, it is also celebrated in other parts of the world, including France. Every March 17, it’s a time to get together, party, drink Guinness (in moderation), and dress… in green, such as a leprechaun costume, and don’t forget to wear your little Irish shamrock! A few people are aware of the holiday’s history and origins, so some historical context is in order.

March 17 is the anniversary of Saint Patrick’s death in the year 461. Saint Patrick was born in the fourth century in Great Britain and is still considered Ireland’s patron saint today. “The list of Irish saints is past counting; but in it all, no other figure is so human, friendly, and lovable as St. Patrick” Stephen Gwynn. He was the deacon’s son and was kidnapped when he was 16 years old. There, he became the slave of an Irish druid. After several years working as a shepherd in Gaelic Ireland, he was able to escape.

He then decided to study theology and become a Catholic priest. He then returned to Ireland with a mission: evangelize the entire country. Today, the missionary is regarded as the founder of Irish Christianity. According to legend, he used a shamrock, the St. Patrick’s Day symbol, to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity.

However, it wasn’t until the 17th century that the Catholic Church declared St. Patrick’s Day a religious holiday. Then, in 1631, Pope Urban VIII declared March 17 as St. Patrick’s Day. Finally, in 1903, the religious festival became a popular celebration when March 17 was declared a public holiday in Ireland. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade in Ireland was held in 1931.
