France has announced the launch of a nationwide rail pass this summer, offering unlimited rail travel for €49 (£42) per month.

The unlimited travel will apply to all trips made on the country’s TER and Intercity trains; however, French transport minister Patrice Vergriete confirmed that only those aged 27 and younger will be eligible for the discounted pass.

High-speed TGV trains and travel in France’s most populous region, Ile-de-France, which includes the capital, 鶹APP, are excluded from the rail offer and require an additional ticket.

The passes will be available for purchase through SNCF Connect in June, allowing young people to travel throughout France. According to Vergriete, the Ministry of Transport estimates that 700,000 young people will benefit from the low-cost rail pass this summer.

The government is expected to fund 80% of the measures needed to implement the pass, with individual regions covering the remaining 20% of the cost.

Several French regions were disappointed by the decision to add an age limit to the national rail pass and exclude the Ile-de-France area.

The Hauts-de-France region criticized the Minister of Transport for lacking ambition in introducing a discounted pass only for young people, even though the rail pass was “favorable.”

If there must be a rail pass, it must be national and apply to the entire French network and must not exclude the Ile-de-France network through which most young people inexorably pass when going to another region by train,” stated Hervé Morin, the president of the Normandy region.
