Barcelona got its first cricket pitch with the launching of the new Julià de Capmany sports facility located in Montjuïc, which also saw the inauguration of a new women’s league.

Cricket found its place in Barcelona thanks to the Pakistani, Indian, and Bengali migrants who settled in the Catalan capital, as it is a hugely popular sport in these nations.

As part of the city council’s participatory budget initiative, the new Julià de Capmany pitch has been renovated from a former disused football pitch.

Julià de Capmany pitch is Barcelona’s first cricket pitch, and it has been created thanks to the initiative of the women’s 11-a-side cricket team, who put it forward as a proposal in the city’s first participatory budgeting (PB) process. 

With 2,441 votes, it was the project that received the most support among the more than 800 projects presented.

Men’s senior cricket will still be played on the baseball pitch in Montjuïc, while women will get a chance to play in the new sports facility, which boasts artificial grass and offers a new home to women’s and youth cricket in Barcelona and the entire Spain.

The pitch presents a multitude of possibilities for cricketers in the entire Catalonia and Spain region, leaving us hoping that one day we can get a chance to watch the Cricket World Cup in Barcelona.

With this new state-of-the-art facility, Barcelona is not only cementing its reputation as a football powerhouse but also embracing the growing popularity of cricket within its diverse community.
