Acclaimed Portuguese guitarist Ângelo Freire dons a ‘new’ hat this May: fado singer.  Lisbon music lovers are in for a treat as Freire presents his debut album as both fado vocalist and guitarist at the Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB) on May 24th, 2024 at 9.00 pm.

Freire is no stranger to the world of fado. His virtuosity on the Portuguese guitar has graced the stages of prestigious venues worldwide such as Olympia, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Sidney Opera House, and the Barbican Centre, among others. With his guitar, he has also performed alongside notable names like Ana Moura, António Zambujo, and Mariza. 

This upcoming concert marks a turning point in Freire’s career.  The CCB’s Grand Auditorium will be the stage for the unveiling of his debut album, a chance for audiences to experience Freire’s artistry not just on the instrument that has brought him acclaim, but also as a vocalist, interpreting the captivating soul of fado.

Fado, a melancholic and expressive form of Portuguese music, is a UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage. Its haunting melodies and introspective lyrics often explore themes of love, loss, and longing.  Freire’s unique perspective, honed through years of accompanying fado’s greats, promises a fresh and captivating take on this cherished art form.
