Composed in 1831, this is a seminal work of the bel canto opera tradition and also stands out as one of Bellini’s best pieces. La Sonnambula tells a short story of a young and beautiful woman, Amina who has a sleepwalking problem. While some people experience mild sleepwalking, Amina has a serious problem as she can do it for hours. For instance, on her wedding night, Amina walks around in sleep, inside the guest’s house.

Her guest’s name is Count Rodolfo and he did not know about Amina’s sleepwalking problem. Therefore, the two fall in love while Amina is sleepwalking.

Later on, her fiancé, Elvino, accuses her of infidelity and is heartbroken because their wedding plans were ruined. Amina has to defend herself from the accusations, and she needs to prove her sleepwalking disorder.
