A tourist tax of two euros for overnight stays is set to commence on May 21^st in the district of Faro. The has intimated its plans to start charging this fee in the municipality as high season approaches.

The tax was to enter into force on May 2^nd but in a statement by the City Council today, it is suspended until May 20^th. Reasons given for this suspension is that some challenges with the payment computer application are yet to be resolved.

José Carlos Rolo, president of the municipality stated that due to these constraints, ‘the starting date for collection is expected to be May 21^st.

Albufeira’s tourist appeal

With the new tourist tax set to apply soon, Albufeira will join other municipalities in the region that tax a fee for tourist’s overnight stays. These include Lagoa, Faro, Portimão, Vila Real de Santo António, and Olhão.

Application

In line with the directions, the fee will be charged for a maximum of seven consecutive nights to all guests aged 13 or above. It will apply to paid overnight stays in resorts, local accommodation areas, caravan parks and campsites. However, for visitors who stay is because of medical treatment are exempt from the fee upon presenting proof of the same.
