Wembanyama not looking to gain muscle any time soon

There is no doubt that Victor Wembanyama is the hottest talent in basketball at the moment and any team that will land him on June 22, 2023, NBA draft would be lucky to have him. However, one thing that is causing fans and pundits to ask too many questions is Wembanyama’s height on a slim body. By now there is no doubt that questions like; Is he strong enough? How long will he last playing? Became a normal thing in Victor’s world. Many people have been concerned by his weight and worry about are, will Wembanyama manage the intensity of the NBA games a concerning issue since he will be going up against huge, experienced grown-ups who otherwise use too much pressure to intimidate.

Although that has been a problem, none of that is a concern for Victor’s side. Instead, they rejected the prospect of Victor rapidly putting on muscle. Victor is officially categorized as weighing 230 pounds and having a slim physique, which causes scouts who are obsessively watching the French prodigy to have too many questions and talking points. Some people think that after Victor gets selected in the June draft, it will come naturally to say that he needs to put on weight and muscle. But Victor’s team maintains that they are focused on other things and that bulking up for him is not their top concern right now.

Holger Geschwindner, a German former professional basketball player who’s known as the long-time coach and mentor of ex-Dallas Mavericks player Dirk Nowitzki has also assured Victor to ignore the noise coming from outside about him adding too much weight. Holger believes that Wemby suddenly adding weight could pose a major risk to his career.

On the other hand, Victor’s agent has termed the focus on Victor adding the weight a ‘mistake’. He said; “The weight will come over time, you know, but the focus on weight is a mistake, I’m 100 percent sure on that. If you put too much weight too quickly on Victor’s body, it’s not going to last. For sure, he will be injury-prone.”

Wemby was recently cited as saying that he has no desire to grow into such a big guy. According to him, “I don’t see myself becoming, like, a really, really big guy.” This comes in the wake whereby it was revealed that for the past five years, Victor has been eating five times a day to help his muscles keep up with his bones. Can you believe that? five meals a day just to avoid bulking?
Victor’s staff contends that the goal is for him to build strength, not necessarily a lot of weight right away.

Taking into context everything, to be an optimal performer in basketball, there are a lot of things involved be it weight, mental stability, or physicality. Wembanyama will be looking to stay fit for the draft and his team will be looking to ensure the phenom stays healthy. Whatever their call will be as long as it works to ensure Victor reaches his goal is what we will be happy to see it. If eating five meals a day and maintaining a lean body will get Wembanyama to his desired goal, so be it.

It’s understandable for fans to request Victor to gain weight and bulk quickly but his camp has a plan for him and we will just have to watch. We understand that sometimes putting on too much weight too quickly for Victor could slow him down as he currently moves swiftly on the court and this makes him effective on the team. It might take time for the body to adjust to the added mass and Victor could feel sluggish and less agile while he’s getting used to it. For a tall player like Wemby who is 7’4″, he is already in the red zone of injuries, and adding weight too quickly will only increase the chances of being sidelined which he doesn’t want to give the closeness of the draft day.
