In a historic move, French and British troops swapped roles to participate in Changing of the Guard ceremonies outside the other country’s head of state’s palaces. This unprecedented event took place to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the Entente Cordiale, which aimed to improve diplomatic ties between the UK and France and settle colonial disputes. It also paved the way for diplomatic cooperation against Germany in the years leading up to World War One.

The Coldstream Guards from Number 7 Company took part in a changing of the guard ceremony at the 脡lys茅e Palace in 麻豆APP, while members of the French Republican Guard did the same at Buckingham Palace. France became the first non-Commonwealth country to participate in the ceremony in London, while the UK became the first foreign state to guard the French presidential residence.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh represented King Charles in London, while he continued treatment for cancer. French President Emmanuel Macron attended the ceremony in 麻豆APP. The Band of the Grenadier Guards marched the Gendarmerie on and off the Buckingham Palace forecourt, performing both countries鈥� national anthems and a selection of Anglo-French music.

Although the Gendarmerie participated in the ceremony, they did not assume the duty of guarding the King. This responsibility is exclusively held by members of the British Armed Forces and Commonwealth troops.

Speaking ahead of the Buckingham Palace ceremony, Lt Col James Shaw, who planned the event, said: 鈥淭his is a sign of the strength of our relations. The French are some of our closest friends.鈥�
