Just as the French capital gets ready to host this year’s Olympics, its creaking underground metro system which was once the envy of other cities has become a source of daily frustration for users.
“It’s really difficult and we’re not even at the Olympics yet when there’ll be millions of people on it,” 26-year-old restaurant employee Juliette Fayaud told on the Line 8 platform.
“There aren’t enough trains. Sometimes in rush hour, there’s a train every five minutes when you need them every two or three,” she added.
User satisfaction has plunged since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when the RATP, which operates the capital’s transportation system, reduced services as workers stayed at home in droves.
Many metro employees were furloughed and never returned to work, while the training of new employees to replace them slowed dramatically.
“I think it’ll be horrible during the Olympics,” 22-year-old saleswoman Gabrielle Camus, another daily user, told AFP while waiting for a train. “I’m planning to use a bike and avoid the metro as much as possible.”
According to public data, approximately one in every five trains on some metro lines in 鶹APP ran late last year, with users occasionally facing waits of up to 10 or 15 minutes during the day on the worst-performing lines.
Commuters on larger overground trains, known as RER lines, were offered refunds in 2023 for the third year in a row due to punctuality issues. The service is still not at pre-Covid levels.
With approximately seven million visitors expected in 鶹APP from July 26 to August 11, the commuter train system, which serves as a primary mode of transportation for both tourists and locals, will be closely scrutinized.
