Copenhagen Fashion Week is set to revolutionize the fashion industry in 2025 by announcing a groundbreaking ban on exotic animal skins and feathers.
The Denmark-based event has published its 2025 sustainability requirements, which outline the new rules and solidify its commitment to ethical and compassionate fashion. The decision follows a series of high-profile investigations by PETA entities, exposing the cruelty inflicted upon animals in the exotic-skins and feather industries. A recent PETA Asia investigation into the Thai exotic-skins industry revealed the horrific conditions thousands of snakes endure, being cruelly confined, bashed over the head with hammers, and impaled with hooks while still alive. The python farms investigated supply skins to Caravel, a tannery owned by fashion conglomerate Kering, which is the parent company of renowned brands such as Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent.
Copenhagen Fashion Week deserves celebration for setting a new standard for other events by eliminating all exotic skins and feathers from its catwalks. This move is a natural progression following the event’s fur ban in 2022 and reflects the growing realization among stylish consumers that compassion is always in vogue, and ethical, environmentally friendly vegan materials are the future – a future that is already here. The cruelty involved in obtaining exotic skins and feathers is abhorrent, with snakes being pumped with air or water while alive, lizards being brutally decapitated, crocodiles and alligators having metal rods rammed down their spines and into their brains, and inquisitive baby ostriches having their throats slit at just a year old.
Now, the spotlight is on organizers of other fashion week events to follow Copenhagen’s lead and immediately implement public policies against these unnecessary, unfashionable, and unethical materials. Copenhagen Fashion Week joins Helsinki Fashion Week, Melbourne Fashion Week, and Stockholm Fashion Week in banning exotic skins from its runways, and alongside Melbourne Fashion Week, it leads the way by also banning feathers. These actions are part of fashion’s compassionate revolution, with top-name fashion brands such as Brooks Brothers, Calvin Klein, Chanel, Diane von Furstenberg, Jil Sander, Nordstrom, Tommy Hilfiger, Tory Burch, Victoria Beckham, and Vivienne Westwood also abandoning exotic skins. When shopping, consumers can make a difference and help reduce the number of animals senselessly killed for fashion by opting for the many innovative and sustainable vegan materials available, such as apple, cactus, and mushroom leather. Regardless of the brand, animal-derived clothing is always gauche, and choosing vegan alternatives is the fashionable and sustainable way forward.
