Budapest’s Citadella Gets A Dramatic Makeover
Budapest’s Citadella, located on Gellért Hill, is currently undergoing extensive renovations as part of the National Hauszmann Programme. This renovation represents a rebirth for the Citadella, transforming it from a symbol of isolation into a place of openness and commemoration. As it embarks on a fresh era, the Citadella stands poised to welcome visitors globally to discover its storied past and rejuvenated essence.
The ongoing stage of improvements on the Citadella is nearing completion, paving way for upgrades that make the fortress more accessible to the public. A key aspect of the restoration involves establishing new strategic entryways on the northern and southern flanks of the cannon turret and behind the statue of liberty.
At the moment significant strides into the renovation have been made in the renovation, with staircase behind the Statue of Liberty now complete and the western gun turret’s construction nearing its end. One major highlight of the renovations is the anticipated glass hall, designed to house an exhibit honoring Hungary’s historical quest for freedom.
The unique structure, entirely made of glass, will be unparalleled in Europe, with see-through walls, ceilings, and even load-bearing elements. Furthermore, the project’s scope includes the Citadella’s landscaping, with the intention to develop a 6,000-square-meter park within the inner courtyard. The reasoning behind this renovation is to make a peaceful environment for visitors, complete with terraces, walkways, and a café.
However, it is worth noting that this project encompasses more than just architectural renovations. An intensive regimen of cleansing, mending, and preservation is underway, resulting in the revitalization of most of the fortress’s walls. The white limestone from Süttö and the red limestone from Tardos have undergone special treatments to bolster their durability.
The renovation’s primary goal is to establish a 6,000-square-meter park in the inner courtyard, complete with terraces, walkways, and a café. This design aims to offer a tranquil atmosphere for visitors to appreciate the picturesque vistas of Budapest.
This restoration efforts of this project are not only to maintains the Citadella’s historical significance but also to redefine it as an inviting local spot for both tourists and locals.
