If you have ever stepped off a train at Prague’s main station, you might have felt a bit underwhelmed. The area around Hlavni nadrazi (Czech for “main station”) has seen better days. But the city has big plans to turn this busy spot into something special.

Danish architects came on top of in a contest to redesign the station and the park next to it. Their goal? To make it a place where travellers and locals alike will want to spend time. Let us take a look at what’s in store for this important part of Prague.

A Wooden Wonder and a Happier “Sherwood”

The coolest part of the new design is a huge wooden roof. It will connect the park (called Vrchlickeho Sady) with the station building. This is not just any roof, it will be one of the biggest wooden structures in the whole country.

The park has a nickname: “Sherwood Forest.” But unlike the legendary home of Robin Hood, this Sherwood has a bit of a bad reputation. The architects want to change that. They’re splitting the park into three areas:

  1. A cultural zone for events and shows
  2. A “station square” for meeting up
  3. A fun zone with extra activities

The idea is to make the park brighter, safer and more enjoyable for everyone. There will even be outdoor cafes, fountains and places to get a drink of water.

Easier Ways to Get Around

Getting to and from the station will be much simpler in the future. A new tram stop is coming right in front of the station. This means you can hop off a tram and walk straight into the building – no more confusing walks or dodging traffic!

The city is also planning a brand-new tram line. It will run from the National Museum, past the station, and connect to other important spots in Prague. This will make it way easier for tourists and locals to zip around the city.

A Blend of Old and New

Prague is famous for its beautiful old buildings and the station area has some real gems. The plan keeps the historic Fanta Building (the fancy old part of the station) but gives it new life. The designers want to make sure you can see and appreciate this piece of Prague’s history.

At the same time, they’re not afraid to add modern touches. The new wooden roof and updated buildings will bring the station into the 21st century. It is all about finding the right balance between preserving the past and creating a station that works for today’s travellers.

When Will We See the New Station?

Do not pack your bags just yet; this big makeover will not happen overnight. The city expects work to start in 2028. That might seem far away, but projects this big take time to plan and build.

The good news is that when it is done, Prague will have a main station it can be proud of. Instead of hurrying through, people might actually want to hang out there. Imagine grabbing a coffee in the park before your train or meeting friends in the new station square.

What It Means for Travelers

If you are planning a trip to Prague in the future, here is what the new station could mean for you:

  • Easier connections: Jumping from trains to trams (and back) will be a breeze.
  • A nicer welcome: Your first impression of Prague will be much more positive.
  • More to do: The station area will be a destination in itself, not just a place to pass through.
  • Safer and cleaner: The redesign aims to make the whole area more pleasant and secure.

A New Chapter for Prague

Cities are always changing and this project shows that Prague is looking to the future. By fixing up its main station, the city is creating a new gateway – one that says “Welcome to Prague!” in the best possible way.

The “Happy Station” project (that is what they are calling it) just might put a smile on your face as you start your Prague adventure in future.
