Visitors to Prague’s Charles Bridge will once again enjoy the charm of the sculpture ‘The Vision of St. Luitgarda’ after four years. It was reinstalled on May 28, 2024, following the completion of repair works on the bridge.

The artwork was removed in 2020 to allow the repair of a crack on one of the bridge pillars where it was mounted. For four years, the sculpture has been kept in the depository of the Gallery of Prague (GHMP), away from public view.

This masterpiece is one of the most beautiful sculptures on Charles Bridge. Besides, it has a rich history behind it. The original piece was done by the Czech sculptor Mathias Bernard Braun in the early 1700s.

The sculpture portrays Luitgarda, a blind nun who cited visitations of Christ in her life. She claimed that during these visits they talked for long periods with Christ. Further, when she was busy helping people Jesus would wait. The sculpture captures one of her most significant visions, a day Jesus appeared to her in a dream. He informed her of his death and let her lay hands on his knees while Jesus stretched his arm on her back. This moment is the highlight of this statue.

Moreover, to preserve Braun’s original piece from deteriorating conditions, it was moved to the Lapidarium of Prague’s National Museum in 1996. It was replaced by a replica in 1995, created by a collaboration of Jiří Novák and Borživoj Rák. That is the statue that visitors on Charles Bridge enjoy today.
