Grazia Deledda was an Italian writer who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926. Artemisia Gentileschi was an Italian Baroque painter. Gentileschi is considered among the most accomplished seventeenth-century artists, initially working in the style of Caravaggio.
In an era when women had few opportunities to pursue artistic training or work as professional artists, Gentileschi was the first woman to become a member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence and she had an international clientele.
9. Rita Levi-Montalcini
Rita Levi-Montalcini was an Italian neurobiologist. She was awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly with colleague Stanley Cohen for the discovery of nerve growth factor.
From 2001 until her death, Rita also served in the Italian Senate as a Senator for Life. This honour was given due to her significant scientific contributions. Rita became the first Nobel laureate to reach the age of 100 and had an event feted in her honour with a party at Rome’s City Hall.
