Maybe you are wondering what happened in the 1940’s well this decade is one historical decade filled with sorrow, patriotism, and the beginning of a new era of America’s dominance on the World stage. This decade is known as the war years, this was the beginning of World War II, and this decade left an indelible mark on all but the youngest of Americans that lasted for the rest of their lives. Despite the decade bringing depression to the world, North Carolina remained largely a place of farms and small towns. During this decade of sadness, people had to look for ways to keep away from mentally breaking down people who needed to be entertained. The American people in the 1930s and 1940s were no exception. They enjoyed many forms of entertainment; movies became increasingly popular. Comedies, gangster movies, and musicals helped people forget their troubles. In 1940 Billboard began assortment and publishing the National bestselling retail records the first single to be recorded I’ll Never Smile Again by Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra. Let’s talk about fashion well many fashion designers were forced in making military clothes so you would not see many men wearing suits or women’s elegant clothing. Suits were simple, two-piece garments, with squared-off shoulders.  Women’s clothing was tailored and elegant, but dresses and suits in wartime were kept simple, ladies wore hats and high heels, and carried long flat leather handbags. Men wore gray and brown suits with white shirts and slim ties, fabrics were heavy and expensive. Even though there was a war the Christmas spirit and the act of giving were still important to Americans, even in times of hardship. Well, this year of hardship pushed people to be creative in the kitchen creating new and delicious recipes, food was scarce during this time and people had to use what they had to be creative. Eggs and vegetables made popular replacements for meat, while meat-stretching recipes such as meatloaf and tomato-based soups became commonplace in the kitchen. After the war ended, food manufacturers explored methods that gave products a longer shelf life.

1. World War II

Hitler’s invasion of Poland in September 1939 drove Great Britain and France to declare war on Germany, marking the beginning of World War II. An estimated 45 to 80 million people were killed, and 6 million Jews were murdered in Nazi concentration camps as part of Hitler’s diabolical Holocaust. This war was among the deadliest international conflict in World’s history, the fighting and bombing in this war destroyed countries and Europe’s economies. The total cost of destruction is estimated to be over $1 trillion causing many European countries to struggle in recovery. This war brought a lot of struggles food was scarce, medical care was also scarce, children could not go to school and the only fashion wear during this time was military clothing. World war II took place from 1939 to 1945 it was between the Axis power Germany, Italy, and Japan fighting against the Allied powers Great Britain, The Soviet Union, and the United States. Hitler believed the Germans were superior, leading him to become obsessed with creating a supposedly superior Aryan race. The leaders during this time were the allied powers led by Winston Churchill United Kingdom, Joseph Stalin Soviet Union, Charles de Gaulle France, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman United States. The Axis powers were led by Adolf Hitler in Germany, Benito Mussolini in Italy, and Hideki Tojo in Japan. The war ended in 1945, after six years of fighting. Europe ended its war when Adolf Hitler committed suicide and with the fall of Berlin and the Soviet Union, Germany surrendered to defeat. The Nazis were taken down a year after Britain, France, the US, Canada, and other allies landed in Normandy, France. For the rest of the world, World War II ended when U.S. General Douglas MacArthur accepted Japan’s formal surrender aboard the US battleship Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Bay.

Pearl Harbor is a U.S. naval base in Hawaii, this base was surprisingly attacked by the Japanese force in 1941 hundreds of Japanese fighters descended on the base and destroyed American naval vessels, battleships, and airplanes. Many Americans died including civilians and many were wounded. After this attack President Franklin. D. Roosevelt waged war against Japan. The reason behind Japan attacking the Harbor, Japan throughout the 20th century wanted to build an empire on its own, after its war with China Japan was low on its natural resources and had to look elsewhere for help. The attack on Pearl Harbor was huge and made the Americans angry, the U.S. geared up for total war against Japan. For nearly four years the U.S navy sank all the Japanese aircraft carriers, battleships,s and cruisers that participated in the attack. The United States and its allies Britain, France, and Russia, among other countries eventually won the war, defeating Japan and its allies, Germany and Italy. Today the harbor is a tourist attraction site many visitors come to visit the Pearl Harbor National Monument built on the water above the wreckage, one can see one of the eight battleships attacked and damaged during the fight, and you can also get a glimpse at the sunken ship 40 feet below water. 4. Anne Frank and her family went into hiding

Anne frank was a young Jewish girl her family moved to the Netherlands from Germany after Adolf Hitler and the Nazis came to power making the life of Jews difficult. Frank and her family went into hiding in a secret apartment behind her father’s business in German. Anne had a diary during her time of hiding first published in 1947 has been translated into almost seventy languages, the diary explains the events that took place in the Holocaust. Frank’s family was joined by Otto’s business associates in the secret apartment and others who were Jewish. Frank referred to the small apartment as the secret annex, the group lived in constant fear and they would never go out. During the day they had to remain quiet to avoid detection, Anne passed her time writing in her diary during her time in hiding. In August 1944 the group was discovered by the Gestapo German secret police. Anne and her sister were deported to the Bergen Belsen concentrated camp in Margot, in the camp there was a lack of food, it was cold and wet and there were contagious diseases. Anne and Margot contracted typhus and died. Anne’s father Otto was the only one of the people from the Secret Annex to survive the war.

5. Warsaw Ghetto uprising

The Warsaw ghetto was the largest Jewish ghetto in German, the Warsaw uprising began in August 1944 under Antoni Chrusciel general, they were supported by the National Armed forces and the communist people’s army, and only a quarter of the people had access to weapons fighting against the German soldiers equipped with air forces and artillery. This Jewish ghetto was sealed off by brick walls, barbed wire, and armed guards, and anyone caught leaving was shot on sight. The Nazis controlled the amount of food brought into the ghetto, and disease and starvation killed thousands each month. German forces took control of Warsaw destroying the city to the ground. Many were killed during this uprising, today the city of Warsaw opened the Warsaw rising museum, and visitors from all over the world come to visit this museum and learn its history.

6. The first computer built

The ENIAC Electronic Numerical Integrator computer was built from 1943 to 1945 it’s the first large-scale computer to run at electronic speed with ought been slowed down with any mechanical parts. The ENIAC’s advancement was instrumental in sparking a revolution in computer science and electrical engineering. The computer traces back to World War II, it took around a year to design and 18 months to build the computer with half a million dollars in tax money. The military used the ENIAC for computation of hydrogen bomb design, weather forecasting, cosmic ray investigation, thermal ignition, and wind tunnel design. 7. Franklin D Roosevelt dies

Roosevelt was the only U.S. president to serve more than two terms, he is the 32nd president of the United States. His third and fourth term was dominated by foreign policy concerns, and this is when the U.S. became part of World War II. During the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Roosevelt directed the organization of the Nation’s manpower and resources for global war. During the war Roosevelt’s health started declining on the fourth run of his presidency, his doctors revealed a variety of heart ailments, high blood pressure, and bronchitis. Franklin returned to warm springs Georgia his favorite retreat destination, sitting for a portrait he collapsed and died of a Cerebral hemorrhage, and vice president Harry Truman took the oath of office the same day. Thousands of Americans were saddened by the death of their president, it was a shock to many. Franklin died in April 1945.

8. Adolf Hitler commits suicide

Once Germany unconditionally surrendered to World War II, Adolf Hitler commits suicide by swallowing a cyanide capsule and shooting himself in the head at his underground bunker in Berlin. He was with his wife Eva Braun when committing suicide, they are a lot of speculation as to why Hitler committed suicide but one of them was death before dishonor, Hitler chose suicide over being tried for his crimes against humanity. Adolf Hitler is one of the most reviled figures in history, he was the leader of Nazi Germany he coordinated both World War II and Holocaust that killed over 40 million people. He is known as the Nazi dictator, he was part of the Nazi party that was based on racist antisemitism, expansionist nationalism, and anti-immigrant hostility.  Hitler was a powerful and spellbinding speaker who attracted a wide following of Germans desperate for change. Hitler was obsessed with superiority and Germany taking over the world and this was the reason for his start of World War II.
