10 Fun Facts About Zinc

Zinc is a chemical element that is a bit brittle usually sustained at room temperature and has a shiny greyish appearance when oxidation is removed. Chemically speaking, zinc is similar to Magnesium because of its one normal oxidation state that is of a similar size. On the periodic table, each atom of zinc has thirty protons. It is also the 24th most abundant element in the earth’s crust. In addition, the largest lodes in the world that contain zinc are found in Australia, Asia, and the U.S. Zinc is usually refined by froth floatation then the final extraction is done using electricity. Having said that, what are some of the fun facts about Zinc?

1. Zinc is very necessary for prenatal and postnatal development

Scientifically, Zinc is an essential element for human beings, animals, plants, and microorganisms. It is also quite necessary for prenatal and postnatal development. This is mostly because of the essential nutrient elements that are relevant for growth. Fun fact: After iron, it is the second most abundant trace metal in human beings and it is an important cofactor for many enzymes that are there.

2. Zinc is very crucial for the proper functioning of the immune system

According to a journal known as Advances in Nutrition (2021), Zinc is an important element for our immune system. It comes in handy in fighting off viruses and hence zinc-deficient people are at a greater risk of contracting infections like HIV or Hepatitis C. In addition, Zinc supplementation is used for the treatment of diseases like Malaria. According to the Molecules and Cells (2021) journal, this is mostly because the nutrients help in passing on the information throughout the body within the immune system and end up regulating the activity of immune-boosting white blood cells. Moreover, zinc is important in healing wounds and improving the sense of taste and smell. Zinc deficiency leads to a number of health problems like growth retardation, loss of appetite, hair loss, and white spots on nails among others hence why it is considered very important in the human immune system.

3. Zinc is also important for brain function

As scientists will argue and agree, Zinc is also quite important for proper brain function. As Neuroscience (2020) journal counters, it is very much involved in neurotransmission and sensory processing and is abundant in many regions of the brain. As stated in the International Journal of Molecular Science, zinc deficiency has been connected to some pathological conditions that have acute and chronic effects on brain function. This is inclusive of age-related cognitive decline, depression, and Alzheimer’s disease.

4. Zinc Supplementation helps with certain skin problems

Nutrient Journal (2021) argues that the human skin is the third most zinc-abundant tissue in the whole body, containing multiple zinc transporters. Dysregulation of these transporters has been linked to skin conditions and diseases like Skin inflammation, overstretched skin, and also skin lesions. The same journal has also attributed zinc to be the solution and treatment of skin conditions like acne and eczema.

5. Zinc also plays a role in metabolism

Until recently, studies and various research have shown that zinc plays a huge role in obesity, insulin resistance, and fat metabolism. According again to Nutrient Journal (2021), researchers are very much interested in the newly discovered zinc-related element which is a type of cell signaling protein released by fat tissue and many of them contribute to inflammation and chronic disease. Studies have shown that excess body fat lowers blood concentration of zinc leading to the development of obesity and other forms of metabolic syndrome. Moreover, zinc supplementation in overweight people significantly reduces blood cholesterol and hence can help in regulating it.

6. Primary use of Zinc is in galvanizing process

According to researchers, the primary use of zinc is in the galvanizing process which basically protects iron and steel from rusting. Zinc can additionally be mixed up with other metals and forged into desired shapes like door handles, brass (when mixed up with copper), and bronze (when mixed up with copper and tin). In Canada for example, brass fitting made with zinc is very popular in plumbing and heat exchange equipment.

7.  Also added to fertilizers

Zinc can also be added to fertilizers in order to increase crop yields and is even used in tire manufacturing.  In fertilizers, zinc always plays a huge role in ensuring that the crops get to have the required nutrients for the to grow and yield the desired outcome.

8. Zinc is Everywhere

Zinc is literally everywhere. It is part of our everyday life when you think about it. It is in every cell of the human body, it is found in the earth, in the food we eat, and in the products we usually use. It can be found in anything from batteries to sunscreen, paints, airplanes, and many other things. After iron, it is also the second most common trace metal naturally found in the body. It is also the fourth most common metal in the industry after iron, aluminum, and copper. It is used in brass, nickel silver, and even aluminum solder.

9. Production of Zinc is on a very wide scale

The production of zinc on a worldwide scale was at 12.9 million tonnes by 2021. This was a 7% increase from the previous year. This goes to show that indeed it contributes to a lot of profit too. For instance, the average monthly zinc prices increased throughout 2021, and to date, this has not fluctuated much. The price was at $2,075 per tonne in January and by December, it had increased to $3,399 per tonne. Basically a 26% increase. It is one of the metals that shows steadiness in terms of profit generation. Fun fact: China by 2021 was the largest producer of Zinc with 4.2 million tonnes of the global total.

10. Zinc originates mostly from recycled zinc

According to a number of researches done, approximately 37% of worldwide zinc production originates from recycled zinc. The sources include scrap galvanized steel and the kind of zinc you will find in batteries. Galvanized steel has a long service life and this affects the amount of recyclable material that ends up being available to the marketplace.

Zinc is a very common metal that can literally be found anywhere. This just goes to show how a part of us as human beings ut tends to be.
