10 Deadliest Natural Disasters in 2021 around the World
In the year 2021, some of the deadliest natural disasters in recent history struck the world. These natural disasters ranged from devastating hurricanes to devastating floods that left a trail of destruction and death. As per the UN, cataclysmic events have impacted in excess of 700 million individuals throughout the last ten years, causing over 1.2 million deaths and costing more than $1.7 trillion in financial terms. In 2021 alone, we saw various disastrous events that added to these stunning numbers. The occurrences were real and had real repercussions for the affected individuals and communities. Ten of the most deadly natural disasters that occurred worldwide in 2021 are the subject of this article. The effects of these disasters were felt far and wide. From floods in Asia and Europe to wildfires that raged across the western United States. Communities were displaced and in some instances, cities were destroyed.
1. Cyclone Tauktae in India

It was the strongest tropical cyclone to hit the western coast of India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) classified the cyclone as a “very severe cyclonic storm.” Recorded wind speeds reached 185 km/h (115 mph). Cyclone Tauktae caused widespread damage to infrastructure and properties along the western coast of India. Severely affected were the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala.
Heavy rainfall saturated the ground leading to landslides in many areas. To prepare for the cyclone the Indian government implemented several measures, including evacuating people from vulnerable areas, suspending fishing activities, and deploying rescue and relief teams. Despite these efforts, Cyclone Tauktae resulted in significant damage and loss of life, with at least 150 people reported dead and thousands of others displaced.
2. Flooding in China

In July 2021, China experienced severe flooding in various provinces, resulting in significant loss of life and damage to infrastructure. It rained heavily for several hours causing rivers to overflow and flood that land. The worst of the flooding was experienced in Henan’s capital Zhengzhou. Worse still substations and trains became death traps drowning the life out of dozens of people. Normal life was disrupted by the lack of electricity, shattered infrastructure and damaged buildings. Several dams were also at risk of collapse, leading to evacuations of nearby residents. Emergency aid and response was quickly mobilised to assist the victims. Overall, the 2021 flooding in China was a major disaster that had a significant impact on the affected regions.

3. Myanmar Landslides

The Myanmar Landslides of 2021 occurred in July and August 2021 in the townships of Hpakant and Tedim in Myanmar’s Kachin and Chin states, respectively. The heavy monsoon rains triggered landslides as the soils in the hilly areas became saturated and unstable. In Hpakant, the landslides occurred on July 22 and 23, killing at least 200 people and leaving dozens missing. The landslides buried jade scavengers who were working in small-scale mines. The Myanmar military, which controls the jade industry in the area, was criticized for allowing the scavengers to work in dangerous conditions.
In Tedim, the landslides occurred on August 9 and 10, killing at least 16 people and leaving many others missing. Rescue efforts were hampered by the difficult terrain and lack of equipment. The landslides in both Hpakant and Tedim highlighted the lack of preparedness and response capacity in Myanmar for natural disasters. The country has also been grappling with political instability and the COVID-19 pandemic, which have further strained its resources and infrastructure.
4. Heatwaves in the United States and Canada

The 2021 Western North America heat wave was an extreme heat wave that affected much of Western North America from late June through mid-July 2021. The heatwave caused power grids to strain under the demand for air conditioning, resulting in rolling blackouts and power outages in many areas. Many schools, businesses and public facilities closed or modified their hours due to the heat, and several cities opened cooling centres to provide relief to those without air conditioning. Climate change is contributing to this phenomenon.

The floods that occurred in Bangladesh and India in 2021 were among the worst ever recorded. Brahmaputra, Ganges and Meghna broke their banks during the monsoon season. The floods in India affected many states and people lost their homes and livelihoods. Significant damage was meted to roads, bridges and power lines. A third of Bangladesh was affected, displacing over 7 million people. Crops and livestock, as well as homes and infrastructure, were extensively damaged by the floods. Experts blamed climate change and warned that extreme weather events like these are likely to get worse and more frequent in the coming years.
6. Flooding in Germany
The flooding in Germany in 2021 was a catastrophic event that occurred in July of that year. The summer had been wet; the ground was saturated and couldn’t absorb the water from the heavy rains. The flows made smaller rivers double in volume. The waves of water surged into the Ahr valley, flooding villages. The Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia were submerged. 180 people died and the damage to infrastructure, homes, and businesses was extensive running into billions of euros. The European Union chipped in with aid after the German government declared a state of emergency. There were renewed calls for taking steps to adapt to the changing climate.

The powerful and deadly Hurricane Ida hit the Louisiana coast. The wind speeds of 150 mph (240 km/h), caused extensive damage and flooding. Over a million customers in Louisiana and Mississippi lost electricity. Many coastal residents had to be rescued from their flooded homes. In addition to the immediate impacts of the storm, Hurricane Ida also had longer-term effects on the region. Many people were displaced from their homes for lack of essential services for weeks. The storm caused at least 95 deaths across several states, with Louisiana being the hardest hit. The impact of one of the most powerful hurricanes is likely to be felt for some time to come.

In the summer of 2021, Forest fires broke out in different parts of the country, especially in the Mediterranean and Aegean, regions. The ongoing heat wave was the cause of the fire. Deployed to fight the blaze were thousands of firefighters, helicopters and planes. Fires have caused significant damage to the environment, wildlife, homes and businesses. The government’s handling of the wildfires was criticised. Concerns were raised about the lack of readiness and accessible assets to manage such disasters later on.

Cyclone Seroja was a powerful tropical cyclone that struck several countries in Southeast Asia and Australia in April 2021. It originated as a low-pressure system near the island of Flores in Indonesia on April 3, 2021, and gradually intensified into a Category 3 cyclone on the Australian scale. After hitting Indonesia, Cyclone Seroja continued to move towards Australia, where it caused further damage to the western coast of Western Australia. Apart from structural damage homes and other buildings were cut off from electricity.
Fortunately, there were no fatalities reported in Australia. The aftermath of Cyclone Seroja prompted significant international aid efforts to help the affected communities. The Australian government pledged AUD 5 million in aid, while other countries and organizations also provided assistance. In Australia and Indonesia, recovery efforts are ongoing for the many people still in need of support.
2021 was marked by several natural disasters that claimed numerous lives and caused widespread destruction across the world. Severe storms, floods, wildfires, earthquakes, and heat waves were part of the spectrum of natural disasters witnessed. Measures such as early warning systems, disaster risk reduction, and preparedness should be given priority to minimize the impact of natural disasters on human lives and infrastructure.
