Sawyer Fredericks- Is He Bi Or Straight?

Winning any season of The Voice as a teenager would probably get you more global attention than when you do it at an older age. Sawyer Christopher Frederick became the youngest winner of the competition’s history when he won the eighth season of The Voice in 2015. His victory came with a lot of media attention including people pushing to know about his background, family, and personal issues such as sexuality.

Born in Newtown, Connecticut in the United States of America, Frederick began his singing career at a young age often choosing blues. He soon became a singer and songwriter earning a place to take part in The Voice as a teenager where he emerged victorious. Choosing Pharrell Williams as his coach must have been the best decision leading to victory in the competition.

Four years later, the superstar had received a lot of questions about his sexuality which he chose not to ignore anymore. While people find difficulties in coming out of the closet and letting everyone know their sexuality, the digital era has made everything better and easier for everyone. Frederick chose social media as his ideal platform where he let the world know that he is bisexual.

On his Instagram account where he has more than ninety thousand followers, the singer opened up about his sexuality and the journey to self-acceptance.

“Since I have not publicly said this in a post, I wanted to say that I am bisexual,” Frederick wrote on Instagram wasting no time to beat around the bush.

In a heartfelt post, the singer explained how he felt when he was young and could not understand his attraction to both men and women. Like many people, he was confused about his feelings because he knew that one was either gay or straight. Not knowing the existence of bisexuality and other sexual orientations, the singer assumed that he was straight and carried on with life not knowing exactly who he was.

“When I was younger I thought I was straight, because I was more attracted to women, and I didn’t know there were more options besides gay and straight. So I just assumed I was straight,” said the singer.

Many people are in the same situation because they do not have enough knowledge about sexuality and because they are not gay, they just assume that they don’t belong to the LGBTQ+ community. Thousands of people are either queer, bisexual, transgender, or gender fluid but have no idea what to call themselves. They do not have the right vocabulary to call themselves and therefore go on with life blindly. Frederick was not going to let that happen to him.

The songwriter went on in the post to explain that his journey has been welcoming because he has never been discriminated against because of his sexuality. He has coexisted with other children in the neighborhood, straight or gay and they played together without discrimination against anyone.

“I am privileged and have never been discriminated against for my sexuality or ashamed of it,” he continued in his post loves to people in his life who have supported him throughout his career despite being different from the rest.

Frederick’s message to his LGBTQ+ fans was to encourage them and hope that those who have felt and been discriminated against would have a better future. He is aware of the segregation in the country and across the world where a lot of anti-LGBTQ+ protests continue as the minority group is left alone.

The singer says that he is “truly sorry for any of you who have been, and I hope it gets better,” referring to the social discrimination that happens every day.

Although coming out in public is a better idea for one to begin a new journey of self-acceptance and being free, Frederick is aware that many people are not going to support him for his decision. Just like in the past, those who came out lost a lot of friends and were even ostracized by their families leaving them in a lonely place. The blues singer was sure to let people know that he would be fine losing a few fans.

“I’ll probably lose some fans over this post, but that’s fine with me,” he concluded his long post alongside photos of himself wearing a rainbow-colored shirt with his trademark long hair hanging on his shoulders.

Although his post was met by a few critics who thought it was a bad idea coming out, there was a lot of positive feedback as several people showed love and support to the then twenty-two years old singer, now twenty-four.

“It is your life, Sawyer. Your music and voice are why I am a fan. Your life is yours to live. I hope your post helps others who are battling with their sexuality,” one fan commented on the post on Instagram reassuring their support for the singer regardless of who he is.

Several other fans showed love as they think that he is still Sawyer despite coming out as bisexual and that those who would leave him were never his fans in the first place.

However, although his Instagram post was the first place many people knew that he was bisexual, Frederick had been open about his sexuality in the past when he spoke to The Daily Gazette about his romantic relationship. He told Daily that he had been living with his partner Tony in New York. The two met in 2017 when the singer was at a rock climbing gym. They have been together for more than half a decade and have an amazing relationship where everyone understands their responsibility.

“We both have our responsibilities of making sure the apartment is clean,” he said in the interview. “I can’t even really call them chores. I’m so used to chores being like ‘You are going to go out to the barn and muck a giant stall.’ So I just sweep the floor? It feels easy,” he concluded.

Therefore the singer has been bisexual throughout his life but came to realize his sexuality when he learnt that there is something else apart from one being gay or straight.
