Dove Cameron Comes Out As Queer: Everything You Need To Know

Dove Cameron is an American singer and movie actress whose star started shining when she was a teenager. The singer had a troubled childhood, and losing her father before she turned ten was the biggest one. Despite her ups and downs, Cameron has won personal accolades including a Daytime Emmy Award. She has been the center of attention on several occasions and coming out as queer put her in the spotlight more than ever before.

Although many people found out about her queerness in her 2021 interview with Gay Times and later with E! News, Cameron says that she has been queer for as long as she can recall. She remembers that she knew that she is queer at the time she began having feelings. She came out as queer a long time ago on different occasions but many people did not realize.

鈥淧eople need me to have a fucking megaphone,鈥� she said in the interview with Gay Times. 鈥淚 came out a year ago and thought that was going to be it. I didn鈥檛 realize that nobody fucking knew.鈥� the singer and actress added.

For those doubting, Cameron made everything clear when she celebrated her first Pride Month as a queer person. Her fans kept asking her questions to prompt her to come out more openly. 

Despite previously coming out, it seems like her coming out in her Instagram Live was not good enough. Telling her fans that she was 鈥榮uper queer鈥� was not a conclusive statement to make people believe her story. She has been accused of gay-baiting in the past; something that made her go live on her Instagram to state that she is queer. However, for those who still doubted Cameron鈥檚 sexuality, her interview with Us Weekly was the best way to clear their doubts.

In the interview with Us Weekly, Cameron spoke about her sexuality and career at large. First, she broke up with her long-term lover, Thomas Doherty, and declared that she was single and dating. Then she explained that her preference in relationships has nothing to do with gender. 鈥淲ith the process of coming out, it was about who I am as a whole rather than who I choose to date or sleep with,鈥� Cameron told Us Weekly. She says that for a long time, she hid in the closet, and now she has decided to love herself more and not conform to society鈥檚 rules.

Dove Cameron added that, despite knowing her sexuality from the past, the people she worked with ignored her queerness. Being bisexual was not considered by Hollywood, which made the actress feel betrayed. She said that after joining the industry as a young actress, she did not find a platform to let everyone know that she was bisexual. She hid in the closet as an actor for the longest time and it is something she doesn鈥檛 love.

Cameron confesses about her childhood, saying it was not the best she would have hoped for. She went to a therapist when she was eight years old and has encountered mental issues throughout her life because of stigma. However, she says that her mental health has improved ever since she came out to the public about her sexuality.
