Lexington is known for being the Horse Capital of the World because it is home to numerous horse farms and racetracks. It feels and looks like a city that was derived from old classic movies. The city is filled with national parks, museums, and an aquarium. However, for book lovers just like me, the city has bookstores that break back the illusion of a good book. Nothing defeats the warm atmosphere of a back-in-time bookstore. Aside from actively promoting our imagination, they also make shopping much better.

Bookstores in Lexington have helped me expand my mind on the possibility of having such a niche and perfect bookstore in real life. As an avid reader, I have always found it difficult to feel at home in a bookshop that doesn’t transport me into a different reality. Many bibliophiles can agree that bookstores that look like they came from a Disney movie tend to ignite dopamine levels.

Either way, the Lexington community has been able to uplift the literary scene in the city. These bookstores serve as a hub for local authors as well as events. Some programs in place allow readers and authors to connect. Even though there is a rise in demand for online stores such as Kindle, the community in the city has enabled many bookstores to keep their doors open for years.

It is an independent bookstore that has a wide selection of books including local and independent presses. They have a wide selection of books across genres such as fiction, children’s books, and antiques. The store hosts events such as author signings, book clubs, and story times. They also have a section that fully supports the local community through various initiatives such as offering books from local authors. Aside from having a lovely store, they also have an online presence that allows readers to browse their book selections and order online.

2. Wild Fig Books & Coffee

It was founded in 2011 and became a worker cooperative in 2018. The store has a curated selection of books. It features books from local and independent presses alongside mainstream titles. Wild Fig is known for hosting events such as author readings, book clubs, and open mic nights. It should be noted that the store is one of the few Black-owned bookstores in the United States. Wild Fig is known for actively supporting local organizations and initiatives that promote social justice and community engagement.

3. Black Swan Books

It is a unique independent bookstore that specializes in used, out-of-print, antiquarian, and rare books. They have a curated selection of books along with maps. Black Swan offers a website that allows their current inventory and offers information about their services. Even though they mainly focus on rare titles, they also carry works by local authors.

4. Glover’s Bookery

It was established in 1978 and has since been serving the community of Lexington. The store has a vast selection of over 80,000 books across genres such as fiction, science fiction, Americana, sporting books, and non-fiction. Glover’s Bookery also features books related to the history, culture, fantasy, and literature of Kentucky.

The store is a haven for equine enthusiasts and offers books on various aspects of horses and horsemanship. Glover’s Bookery is a proud member of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers.

5. Friends Book Cellar

It is operated by the “Friends of the Library” organization which is a non-profit group that supports the library. The store raises funds for the library through the sale of donated books and DVDs. Friends Book Cellar consists of gently used books that are donated by the community. They have a selection of fiction, children’s books, science fiction, magazines, and non-fiction.

Aside from selling books, the store hosts themed events and author talks that attract customers and generate revenue for the library. It should be noted that the store is run by volunteers who are passionate about books and supporting their libraries.

6. Constitution Rare & Antique Bookstore

It is a family-owned bookstore that specializes in rare and antique books, maps, and prints. It has a curated selection of rare books including first editions, signed copies, and limited-edition prints. They also carry a diverse range of antique maps and historical documents related to Kentucky.

The store is known for specializing in subjects such as Kentucky history, Americana, military history, and natural history. Constitution Rare & Antique bookstore frequently hosts events such as author signings, book talks, and exhibitions that showcase unique items from their collection.

7. International Book Project Inc

They have shipped books to over 168 countries which have impacted countless individuals and communities. International Book Project has a store in Lexington that offers educational programs to Kentucky students.

8. Benedictus Book Store

It is a Christian bookstore that specializes in religious books, Bibles, church supplies, and gifts. It is run by a dedicated family that fosters a welcoming and personalized atmosphere for customers. The store offers a diverse range of books that cover various theological topics, devotional texts, and Christian fiction. They also offer Bible translations, study guides, commentaries, and other resources for deeper biblical understanding. Benedictus Book Store actively supports local churches and ministries. 

9. A+ Comic & Collectibles

It is a comic book store that also deals with toys, board games, and collectibles. They offer new and vintage comics that cater to casual readers and collectors. Aside from books, they also have a range of toys, figurines, and collectibles from various pop culture franchises including movies and video games.

A+ Comic & Collectibles hosts events such as game nights, release parties, and artist signings. The store has a knowledgeable staff that is passionate about toys, comics, and collectibles. Even though they have a physical store, they have a website and social media platforms.

10. The Morris Book Shop

It was founded in 2008 and was opened by Wyn Morris, an experienced bookseller with a passion for creating a welcoming space. In 2012, the store moved to a larger location. The store has a wide selection of books across various genres. The Morris Book Shop hosts events such as author readings, book signings, and live music that foster a vibrant literary atmosphere. The store is noted for being a valuable community hub.

The Booksellers of Lexington is known for being a valuable part of the community in Lexington.

12. Brier Books

It is an independent bookstore that was established in 2018. It is owned by Kay McCory and Savannah Sipple, they are both poets who wanted to offer a store with personalized recommendations. The store offers a curated selection of new and used books across genres such as poetry, children’s books, and non-fiction. Brier Books is known for actively supporting independent publishers and showcasing the works of local writers. 

13. Half Price Books

It was founded in 1972 by Ken Gjemre and Pat Anderson. It is currently the largest family-owned bookseller in the United States. The store offers new and used books, movies, music, and video games. They also have a wide selection of genres such as fiction and horror. Half Price Books operates a user-friendly website that allows book lovers to browse and order online instead of going to the physical store. The store hosts events such as story times and book clubs.

14. The University of Kentucky Bookstore

It is officially known as the UK Official Bookstore. It should be noted that the store is operated by Barnes & Noble College. They offer a wide selection of textbooks, general interest books, and course materials. The store regularly hosts events such as author readings, and study groups. The University of Kentucky Bookstore is a central hub for students and faculty to access essential academic materials.

15. New Book Store

It is an independent bookstore that offers a wide selection of books including non-fiction, fiction, and romance classics. The store is noted for being a community hub due to the fact that it hosts events such as author signings, book clubs, and children’s story times. The store is known for having an entire section that offers books from local authors and independent presses.  Aside from books, they also offer magazines and local newspapers. 

All in all, these bookstores have created a community hub in Lexington. With their numerous events and support for local authors, bookstores in the city have become a vital part of the community. Aside from introducing a vibrant literary scene, they have helped in growing the minds of young children and teenagers. These bookstores have been noted for bringing life back into Lexington.  With activities such as workshops and game nights, these bookstores have been able to engage children and adults all together.
