10 Infamous Murders Committed in Baltimore
Baltimore is famously known for being notorious because of the crime rate which has been ranked about the United States average. In 2015, there was a spike in violent crime after the death of Freddie Gray. His death took place on 19th April 2015 leading to increase in riots and murders.
The number of homicides in the city of Baltimore have been on the rise. Some of the deaths are linked to criminal gangs and other homicides. These murders have taken place in areas with poverty and drug dealing.
Freddie’s murder/death in police custody is one of the infamous murders that took place in Baltimore. Since 2017, the homicides taking place in Baltimore have spurred past the fifty past mark at 55.7%. In 2023 alone, at least 188 people have been murdered in Baltimore in gun violence. Here are the 10 Infamous Murders Committed in Baltimore:
1. Freddie Gray’s Murder in Police Custody
25-year-old African-American man, Freddie Carlos Gray was arrested on 12th April 2015. This was after he was found in possession of a knife while in Baltimore’s Gilmor Homes housing project neighbourhood. However, the young man died a few day later on 19th April 2015 while in police custody.
The homicide/murder incident of Freddie caused an uproar in the neighbourhood with several reports claim that the officers who arrested him were responsible. Several eye witnesses revealed that he was bungled up without consideration during his arrest. The manner in which he was moved to the prison and how he was handled contributed largely to his death.
Medical examiners on the body of Freddie revealed that the officers who were involved in his arrested contributed to his murder. It was concluded that Freddie’s death was a homicide as there were no safety procedures, through acts of omission were followed. Six policies officers from the Baltimore police department were arrested and charged for the murder of Freddie.
The death of Freddie Gray led to massive riots in Baltimore. There were several murders through this period of violent outbursts in the city.
2. Jalil George
24-year-old Jalil Rashad George was an enterprising young man who was his family’s provider. However, his life was cut short on 7th December 2022 in the city of Baltimore. As a real estate investor, George was on a mission of changing Baltimore and making the city better.
Back in July 2022, he had posted a video on social media expressing his joy about buying a prime property in Park Heights so that he can renovate and sale it. Five months later as he was walking through the investment property, George was murdered. He was shot and killed by an unknown gunman.
At around 3 in the afternoon on the 7th day of December, police were called to the 2500 block of Oswego Avenue. They found George’s body lying on the ground bearing gun wounds in the arm and the head. The afternoon homicide was described by police as an apparent case of mistaken identity. Because a neighbouring incident involved a car of a similar make and model, they think George was targeted because of his vehicle.
3. Aaliyah Gonzalez
Aaliyah Gonzalez was shot and died at a celebration in the Brooklyn Homes neighbourhood of Baltimore when she was only 18 years old. After her murder, the Gonzalez’s family stated that she was everything to them. Her murder left them devastated.
Gonzalez’s family claimed that she had received a last-minute invitation to the party. They said that she went to show her support to her pal that had invited her. However, at around 12:30 am on 2nd July 2023, police received multiple calls about the shooting at this party.
At least two shooters opened fire at the Brooklyn Homes event early on Sunday morning, according to the Baltimore Police Department. Aaliyah was among the two who were killed in the shooting.
4. Kylis Fagbemi
On that unfortunate night when Aaliyah was murdered in the mass shooting, 20-year-old Kylis Fagbemi was also murdered. The young man who was a forklift operator at Amazon was the second victim of the shooting incident. He had received the invite to the party that was taking place at the Brooklyn Homes.
As the shooters stormed the party and shot indiscriminately, Kylis was also shot. He was rushed to hospital but died while receiving treatment. His family gave moving tribute about him and stated that he had huge future dreams.
5. D’Asia Garrison
Have you ever imagined of the pain the family of a young girl go through after losing her? Well, 17-year-old D’Asia Garrison was another victim of gun violence in the city of Baltimore. What makes this case worse is that she was the first murder victim in Baltimore in 2023.
Shortly before 3:30 am on New Year’s day, Garrison was shot dead in what was a violent incident of shooting. The shooting took place along the 700 block of North Glover Street in East Baltimore where several homes and vehicles were damaged in the shooting. Unfortunately, Garrison was hit by some of the bullets and died in hospital.
6. Jeanette Thompson
On 26th August 2023 at around 5:44 am, police received a report of a stabbing incident in West Baltimore. This was an urgent matter that the police reacted quickly and arrived at the scene. On arrival at the scene, police found a 43-year-old woman who was lying in a pool of blood after she was stabbed.
Jeanette Thompson had suffered multiple life-threatening stab wounds. She died on the scene shortly before medics arrived at the scene. The case is still ongoing as police continue hunting for the person who stabbed and murdered Jeanette Thompson.
7. Kashay Davis
Along the 800 block of Guilford Avenue in Baltimore on 21st August 2023, two people were shot dead in another shooting incident. 26-year-old Kashay Davis and 25-year-old Navontay Whitener were the latest victims of murders in Baltimore. The two were shot at while at the Mount Vernon Market Center by some unknown people.
Navontay Whitener was pronounced dead on the scene, but Kashay was pronounced dead later on Monday. This double murder incident has proven hard to solve as there no CCTV cameras function at the moment because the businesses were closed.
8. Kelsey Washington
13-year-old Kelsey Washington is another victim of the Baltimore shooting murders that are rampant. She was murdered on 7th November 2022 at around 5:19 pm in the 1400 block of E. Fayette Street. According to the police and witnesses accounts, Kelsey was an innocent bystander at a liquor store parking lot when someone fired a shot.
She was hit by the bullet and rushed to a hospital where she was declared to be a life-threatening condition. Kelsey went into brain death on Saturday and died on Monday evening. 35-year-old Tavon Battle was arrested and charged for the murder of Kelsey.
9. Monica Bullock
Another touching murder incident is of 31-year-old Monica Bullock who was shot dead near the apart she was living. Monica had struggled with depression when her son died. She began abusing painkillers as well as alcohol as she was in the process of mourning.
On 26th August 2022, Monica was fatally shot in the 5300 block of Eastbury Avenue. Police dashed to the location and found her in a critical state. She unfortunately died with her family seeking for justice.
10. Victorino Malabayabes
60-years-old Victorino Malabayabes became a murder victim on 20th August 2022 after a botched robbery. That Saturday evening, the old man was along the 600 block of South Kenwood when he was attacked. A man approached him and requested for a tissue paper which he went to get.
However, this simple request turned out to be a robbery as the man shoved him against a vehicle and dropped him on the ground. The robbery took away the victims items and ran away from the scene. Victorino was attended by medics but he died a day later.
The Baltimore police department and the community have been working hand in hand to curb the homicide incidents brought about by violence. Their efforts are paying off well as the murder incidents are gradually going low.
