10 Amazing Facts About Supermodel Winnie Harlow

Harlow has been a Canadian fashion model and public advocate for vitiligo skin disease.  She was born in 1994  in the Greater Toronto Area. Winnie Harlow rose to fame in 2014. This after competing on the 21st season of the US television program America’s Next Top Model.

At the age of four, she was identified as having vitiligo. A persistent skin condition marked by depigmentation of certain areas of the skin. Throughout her childhood, students of all races allegedly dubbed Harlow a “cow, zebra. And all sorts of other insulting names” and subjected her to bullying at the hands of other kids.

1. Winnie Harlow was one of the 14 finalists of the 21st cycle in America’sNext Top Model

In 2014, Harlow was one of the 14 finalists of the 21st cycle of America’s Next Top Model. After she was found on Instagram by the show’s host Tyra Banks. She was the only Canadian cast member of ANTM to date. Harlow was eliminated during the second week of the finals. And she afterward took part in a different competition called the “comeback series”. Where she continued to take part in the cycle’s photo shoots with the other participants. When the comeback series was over, it was discovered that she had received the highest average score from the general people and she decided to come back. In episode 13, she was once more evicted, making her the ninth person to go. 

2. She is the  first model with vitiligo in history

Winnie’s skin condition, vitiligo, which is characterized by a lack of skin pigment was discovered when she was only four years old. Just 1% of people on Earth have it, and melanin deficiency is what causes it.

Because of this, having a model walk the runway while having vitiligo was unheard of until Winnie. Despite the fact that she didn’t get to the finals of “America’s Next Top Model,” she became well-known after participating in the competition. Nonetheless, Winnie has since made appearances on magazine covers and the packaging of high-end clothing companies like Victoria’s Secret.

3. Winnie had to attend school at home to avoid being bullied

Online and in schools, bullying has tragically become more common, and Winnie was a victim. Unfavorable comments were made since her skin tone was different from that of her friends. She was even called a “zebra” by some people. She could no longer bear it because it became too much. Because of the verbal harassment, she repeatedly moved schools, dropped out of high school, and subsequently had suicidal thoughts. According to CNN, Winnie stopped attending traditional school and began receiving instruction at home.

4. She was the show’s first and only Canadian model ever to be chosen on America’s Next Top Model

She was discovered on Instagram by the show’s host, Tyra Banks. 2014’s 21st season of America’s Next Top Model had Harlow as one of its 14 finalists. She was the only ever Canadian to be selected for ANTM. She took part in a different competition known as the “comeback series,” where she competed among the other contestants who had been eliminated in an effort to return to the competition after being eliminated in the second week of the finals. Upon learning that she had received the highest average public vote score following the conclusion of the return series, she made a second appearance. In episode 13, she was taken out once more, making her the ninth elimination.

5. Winnie  Harlow enjoys massages

Winnie enjoys treating herself to massages after a tough week because, in her eyes, they are a necessity, not a luxury. When she is at home, she will carry out tasks there, but when she is traveling, she will seek counsel. She gave the Four Seasons in Istanbul as an example of a massage parlor since she thought the service was excellent.

6. Beyoncé selected Winnie Harlow for a part in her movie

Her destiny was about to change when Winnie received a part offer in a movie. She declined since she didn’t realize it was Beyoncé’s. But, Winnie was given all the motivation she needed when Beyoncé’s assistant revealed who directed the film. Winnie took a plane to New Orleans, where the movie was being shot, to meet Zendaya, Serena Williams, and Blue Ivy Carter.

7. She has modeled for several clothing brands and fashion magazines as well as exhibited in commercial campaigns

After losing the competition on America’s Next Top Model, Harlow was named the official brand ambassador for the Spanish clothing firm Desigual. During London Fashion Week in September 2014, she took part in the runway presentation and the closing for the Ashish spring/summer 2015 collection. She has modeled for fashion websites Showstudio.com and magazines including Dazed and i-D. Harlow acted as the face of the spring/summer 2015 advertising campaign for the Italian clothing company Diesel, which was captured by British fashion photographer Nick Knight. She appeared in the Spanish and Italian versions of Glamour magazine and was profiled in the August/September 2015 issue of Complex magazine.

Also, she received attention in the August 2015 issue of Cosmopolitan. She was the focus of an interview and image shoot that were published online by Vogue Italy. Harlow shot the cover and an editorial piece for the September issue of Ebony magazine in August 2015 alongside former America’s Next Top Model contestant Fatima Siad. In 2016, Harlow was featured in two Swarovski commercials and a Sprite campaign. In the same year, she received recognition as one of BBC’s 100 Women. In 2018, she took part in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show as a model.

With Marc Jacobs, Puma, Tommy Hilfiger, Desigual,Madden, Diesel, Victoria’s Secret, Swarovski, Steve  Nike,  Fendi and MAC, Harlow has starred in commercials.

8. At the 2018 Canadian Grand Prix, Winnie Harlow raised the checkered flag two laps early

During the Canadian Grand Prix of 2018, Harlow had the chance to hoist the victory flag. A mix-up among race officials resulted in Harlow being given the order to wave the flag on what was to be the final lap of the race. Because the Formula One racing rules were followed, the final result was declared based on the positions at the end of lap 68. The error had no appreciable impact on the race’s outcome.

9. Harlow has made music video appearances

“Where’s the Love” by The Black Eyed Peas, “Guts Over Fear” by Eminem, “The One” by JMSN, and “Promises” by Calvin Harris are some of the songs on this list. She made a fleeting cameo in the “visual album” Lemonade by Beyoncé and in Lilly Singh’s YouTube video “Three Women, One Elevator” (also known as Superwoman).

10. Harlow established the skincare and sunscreen company Cay Skin

Winnie Harlow states that after suffering serious burns during a photo shoot in March 2022, she was motivated to found Cay Skin. She had been instructed not to reapply sunscreen by the photographer in order to avoid the white cast that conventional sunscreen lotions leave on images.
