Disentis Mustér is its full name. It is a village and municipality in the Swiss canton of Graubünden’s Surselva Region. One of Switzerland’s oldest Benedictine monasteries is located in the high Rhine valley skiing and summer tourism resort. The monastery was founded in 720, and the current complex dates from 1696 to 1712.

The Disentis ski resort in the Canton of Grisons offers a variety of slopes at altitudes of up to 2,833 meters to winter sports enthusiasts of all levels. However, with 30 km of red-marked runs, advanced skiers in particular are likely to get their money’s worth there.

The ski area’s signature feature is already visible here: the black-marked valley run. You should be a very experienced skier if you want to return to S. Catrina on skis. Everyone else should take the gondola back after skiing. Beginners and advanced skiers will have to climb higher to reach the appropriate slopes.

Winter sports fun for beginners and families begins at the blue-marked downhill run. It leads down to Caischavedra via Dadens and Gendusas.

Advanced skiers can go even higher, using the drag lift to the Péz Ault, the ski area’s highest point. They can reach Gendusas via the red-marked slope from there. They can also switch to a blue-marked run in Lai Alv and then to a red-marked run in Dadens to continue exploring the red-marked runs. Alternatively, they can switch to the blue-marked run in Lai Alv and then to a red-marked run in Dadens to continue exploring the red-marked runs below Péz Strem.

The holiday resort of Disentis, or Mustér as it is called in Romansh, lies at an altitude of 1,130 m above sea level.

The village, located in the upper Surselva Valley on the Upper Rhine, offers a variety of outdoor activities throughout the year. The Romansh culture shapes village life, with warm hospitality available in hotels and restaurants. Disentis also has a plethora of culinary delights to offer. Visitors should try the local specialty of Capuns Sursivans (Swiss chard rolls).

Summer in Disentis is also an excellent time to explore the region by hiking or biking along the Upper Rhine, climbing high into the mountains, or panning for gold. In the summer, taster courses are available.

The Benedictine Disentis Abbey’s efforts to forge a link between tradition and modernity are reflected in the village’s various businesses. In addition to the sacred monastery buildings, there is a secondary school, a modern farm, a bakery, a public restaurant, and much more.

If you want to change to the neighboring Ski Arena Andermatt-Sedrun, you must still take the train from Sedrun’s valley station to Dieni station (approx. 5 minutes). The 120 kilometers of slopes can be used with a 3-day ski pass, but there are also day passes for the entire Andermatt Sedrun Disentis area.

Three refreshment stops ensure that hungry skiers and snowboarders are well-fueled for the next descent. This is because of the adjacent children’s playground, the panorama restaurant Caischavedra is popular for salads and cakes. The children are always visible from the sun terrace.

The Lai Alva mountain restaurant serves authentic Graubünden specialties. Guests can also enjoy a unique panorama of the surrounding mountains, including the Medels glacier, from the sun terrace at 2,505 meters above sea level. The best place for a quick snack in between is the Bar Nevada. There is even a barbecue there when the weather is nice. In addition, “local firewater” can be consumed in convivial company.

7. It has a couple of must-ski runs best suited for experienced skiers

The black-marked valley run from Caischavedra to S. Catrina is a must-do for experienced skiers. The 5 km long downhill run is also the most difficult run in the Disentis ski area, with an altitude difference of 636 meters.

The longest descent, on the other hand, is the run from Péz Ault, the ski area’s highest point, to S. Catrina. It should be noted that the 12 km long slope’s final stretch is the black-marked valley descent, which is only recommended for experienced winter sports enthusiasts.

The lama will carry whatever is required for the adventure. You only need to bring yourself. A one-hour trial trek, a holiday or full-day trek, or an hour tour of several days in the mountains, including overnight stays in a tank or mountain hike, are examples. It is appropriate for children aged 6 to 13 years.

The Klostermuseum is a monastery museum located on the hillside of Disentis. The museum’s exhibits depict the monasteries’ centuries of history through paintings, sculptures, statues, liturgical paraphernalia, and vestments from the middle and modern ages.

The pieces on display provide an excellent insight into the monastery’s ancient history, as well as the social and cultural conditions of the region. When visiting Disentis, history buffs should definitely stop by the museum.
