Oriental Pearl Radio & Television Tower is a TV tower in Shanghai. Its location at the tip of Lujiazui in the Pudong New Area by the side of Huangpu River, opposite The Bund, makes it a distinct landmark in the area.  

Its principal designers were Jiang Huan Chen, Lin Benlin, and Zhang Xiulin. Construction began in 1991, and the tower was completed in 1994.  

At 468 m (1,536 feet) high, it was the tallest structure in China from 1994–2007, when it was surpassed by the Shanghai World Financial Center.  

It is classified as an AAAAA scenic area by the China National Tourism Administration. The tower is brightly lit in different LED sequences at night.  

The entire tower is supported by three enormous columns that start underground. The tower is supposed to make the viewer think that pearls are dropping onto a jade plate.  

The entire scene is a photographic jewel that excites the imagination and attracts thousands of visitors year-round.

1. There is a Museum on Site 

There is a museum there that has 6 exhibition halls. The six halls are ‘The Scenery of the Chengxiang’, ‘Sketch of the Port-opening’, ‘Foreign Settlement’, ‘Old Footsteps at Sea’, ‘the Construction Exhibition’, and ‘Automobile Exhibition’. 

The museum includes 81 scenic spots, which reflect the development of Shanghai. There are hundreds of precious historical relics and scaled-down gorgeous buildings, 117 life-size wax figures, and thousands of small wax figures and clay figures.

2. The Tower Has Many Spheres 

The tower features 11 spheres, big and small. There are 3 large spheres including the top sphere, known as the space module.  

The two largest spheres, along the length of the tower, have diameters of 50 meters (164 ft) for the lower and 45 meters (148 ft) for the upper. The space module sphere is 14 meters (46 ft) in diameter.  

3. The Tower Has 15 Observation Levels

The tower has fifteen observatory levels. The highest (known as the Space Module) is at 351 m (1148 ft). The lower levels are 263 m (863 ft) (Sightseeing Floor) and 90 m (295 ft) (Space City).   

There is a revolving restaurant at the 267 m (876 ft) level. The project also contains exhibition facilities and a small shopping center. There is also a 20-room hotel called the Space Hotel between the two large spheres.  

The upper observation platform has an outside area with a 1.5-inch glass floor.  

4. There is a Transparent Observatory  

The 259M Transparent Observatory, the only 360-degree transparent observatory in the world, is made of tempered glass, 150 meters long and 2.1 meters wide.  

You can overlook the city here. And you will have a different visual experience. Above that glass is the main observatory at 263m. 

The Sightseeing Floor is the main sightseeing layer. You stand high and you can get a bird’s-eye view of the city from there. It is one of the best places to appreciate the beautiful scenery of the city.  

Here, you will see architecture of different styles on the Bund and cruises on the Huangpu River.  

5. There is a Broadcast Antenna  

There is an antenna, broadcasting TV and radio programs at 118 meters (387 ft) high. Sometime back. on 13th April 2010, the antenna at the top of the tower caught fire at around 2 am.  

The fire was then put out by firefighters. No casualties were reported. The fire could have been caused by a series of thunderstorms.  

6. The Highest Sightseeing Floor is 351 Meters Above the Ground

The 351M Space Capsule Sightseeing Floor is the highest sightseeing layer. With a diameter of 16 meters, the space capsule presents the science-fiction charm of the space scene in a futuristic style.

The space capsule has been engineered to look like a space shuttle. There is a person in an astronaut’s costume to welcome guests into space.  

Photos and videos in the capsule educate tourists about outer space as well as about this portion of the tower. There is also a hotel known as the Space Hotel. It has 20 rooms which are in between the two larger spheres.
