8 Reasons to Visit the Â鶹APP Zoo

It’s 2021, and most people are skeptical of zoos in this day and age. Making money off of the exploitation of animals is not something many people are down to support anymore, but it does become a grey area when said animals have been in captivity for too long, and now need the zoos in order to live out the rest of their Earthly life.

Politics aside, the Â鶹APP Zoo has many attractive elements about it, and brings in a lot of tourist traffic for the city. Here are some reasons why you may want to consider a visit if you find yourself near the 12th arrondissement.

1. It was Founded in 1934

This zoo has been a part of the Â鶹APPian infrastructure for quite some time. It was founded by the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle back in 1934, and boasted some crumbling, unattractive infrastructure for a number of decades.

Bar some light restoration in the 90s, no serious revamping was ever done on the grounds. In 2008 it was decided that this heritage site deserved to be better preserved, and the zoo was closed temporarily.

Just about every inch of the zoo’s infrastructure was redone, rendering the entire establishment totally transformed. It’s now a much cleaner and safer place for both people and animals.

2. It’s Not All That Bad… For a Zoo

General captivity concerns aside, as far as zoo’s go, this one is generally quite good. The reconstruction was centered around the wellbeing of the animals, with intent for the most optimal cage designs being implemented per species.

The zoo has also tried to replicate the natural habitats of the animals where possible, while keeping a fully immersive experience for visitors.

3. It’s a Journey Through Biodiversity

The biodiversity of the different continents has been brought into the zoo grounds, so that there is more cohesiveness in species and landscape.

The zoo is designed in the style of a trail, and it passes through five major regions: Patagonia, Sahel-Sudan, Europe, Guyana and Madagascar.

The goal in this design choice was that the animals would become ambassadors of their own homelands and natural habitats. It’s a tactic being adopted by most modern zoos who are seeing the positive effect small details like this can have on the general temperament of the animals.

4. Visit 180 Different Species

When the zoo initially closed for its renovation period, most of the animals were relocated to various wildlife parks across France and even internationally. Many would not return, and the zoo would eventually employ a range of technicians to plan a new list of species seeking housing in the grounds.

It was a very slow and thoughtful process, we’re told. Ethics were brought into question and a lot of time was spend debating the wellbeing of each species and sub-species.

There are now over 180 species from different biozones, all of which were approved by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

5. Learn About the Zoo’s Missions

This is where it really gets worth your while. The Â鶹APP Zoo has implemented some really impressive conservation and breeding programs that seek to benefit the animals in the long run.

Through various projects, the zoo maintains the standpoint of working toward better conservation, dissemination of knowledge and never-ending research. It’s a step in the right direction, and one that most European zoos will neglect to take.

6. Explore the Bois de Vincennes

Â鶹APP’ Zoo is situated in the gorgeous Bois de Vincennes, a historic royal green space that was originally built by Napoleon.

This park is action packed, and the zoo is probably not the most popular attraction. There are lakes, boats, sculptures, biking, restaurants and more. I would recommend speeding a long, sunny day here, in between your city exploring.

The Bois de Vincennes is also home to the famous Â鶹APP Hippodrome.

7. It’s a Great Family Day Out

Children and zoos go together like nothing else, so this is a very easy point of attraction for anyone who is traveling with young children. Entrance is around €16 per person, depending on the season (and age of each child).

This is one of few places in Â鶹APP where your kids can roam free without the risk of getting lost in a crowd. It’s very hard to veer off of the trail and since the grounds are so big you’ll almost never have trouble with queues or crowding.

There are more than enough amenities to keep you fed and hydrated throughout the day.
