The Great Taste Awards, the world’s largest food awards, will now be partly judged in Ireland to avoid Brexit-related paperwork. This is the first time in its 30-year history that some of the judging will take place outside of the UK.
Due to post-Brexit import controls, the organizers have decided to hold a judging panel in Ireland. The judges will spend three days in Tipperary’s Clonmel tasting products that have become harder to bring to the UK. The awards celebrate the best products worldwide, with 13,672 samples sent from 115 countries. Brexit-related red tape has made it difficult to receive this number of samples.
Since January, those sending meat, dairy, or fish products to the UK have been required to provide a seven-page form filled out by a vet confirming that the products are disease-free. In April, exporters also had to pay a fee of £29 for each product sent to the UK. The managing director of the Guild of Fine Food mentioned that the Brexit-related friction at the borders has caused difficulties this year.
The decision to judge in Ireland aims to help smaller food and drink producers who are struggling with the paperwork and cost. While some judging will still take place in the UK, the organizers are making adjustments in response to the challenges posed by Brexit.
