Pentecost is an important day in the Christian calendar, celebrated fifty days after Easter Sunday. May 19 will be the fiftieth day after Easter Sunday in 2024, and Romans are ready to celebrate this important day. This day, representing the events described in the Acts of the Apostles when the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus’ disciples, will be celebrated in the Pantheon with colorful events in the presence of Roman firefighters, citizens, and visitors.

Historically, Pentecost was a ceremony that celebrated the wheat harvest as people gave thanks to God for giving them great harvests. The Christian Pentecost, however, signifies the ‘harvest’ of believers, as the Holy Spirit-filled Christians are commissioned to spread the gospel across the world, saving souls. 

In Rome, Pentecost is celebrated in the Roman pantheon with flower petals symbolizing the Holy Spirit. The firefighters release thousands of rose flower petals to the pantheon through the oculus of the pantheon to represent the coming of the Holy Spirit to the people. 

According to Wanted in Rome, the ceremony will begin after the morning mass that ends at ten o’clock, allowing everyone to be part of the celebrations. This year’s Pentecost is also a unique one because it is the first time an entry fee is needed to enter the pantheon.

Roman Catholics, Christians, and visitors to the city are free to be part of this colorful ceremony. The Pantheon will be full, which means that if you arrive late, you will not be allowed to go inside.
