Spurs Expected To Max-Out Wembanyama’s Contract For Better Or Worse
For the past two decades since LeBron James, there has never been a surefire number-one draft pick prospect coming to the NBA.
Victor has matched if not surpassed all the expectations and ticks all the boxes when it comes to a player coming to the NBA. The lad is 7’4”, and has an 8-foot wingspan.
He is renowned for both his talent and his general playing style. Due to his alien-like height, Victor will undoubtedly find it easier to complete some tasks that other players cannot.
Under his strong ball-handling skills and quick first step, he can outrun the defense despite his tall stature and make the shot. His shooting is accurate and lethal beyond the arc.
He is a formidable rim protector and difficult to contain on the defensive end thanks to his height and speed. All these attributes of a 19-year-old make him a one-of-a-kind player in the history of basketball.
Victor is projected to be the first overall pick in the June 22, 2023 NBA draft and with the Draft Lottery complete with San Antonio Spurs getting the first pick, we can all agree that Victor might end up at the AT & T.
Being one of the most coveted drafts prospected in this year’s lottery, most teams were hoping to land him on their roster. The Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets, and the San Antonio Spurs had the highest probability of landing the first overall pick at 14% before the lottery but it was the Spurs that won that opportunity.
Victor joining the Spurs will mean everything for the team, first playing with a young athletic team and coached by the legendary Gregg Popovich, Victor is expected to be up and running quickly.
Victor being the holy grail of the game right now teams were willing to keep him for the long term and now that the Spurs are halfway there with the first draft pick, we expect them to do just that.
A tweet from Sean Highkin of Rose Garden Report just shows what lengths teams are willing to go to to keep Wembanyama on their franchise.
Tweeting on May 16, 2023, before the Draft Lottery, Sean’s tweet read, “A front-office person told me today at the combine that if Victor Wembanyama had an Embiid-like multiple-season injury before the draft, not only would every team still take him #1, they’d be willing to max him out on his second contract without seeing him play.”
This is unbelievable! Even with an injury, will they still draft him first?
Yeah well, Victor’s talent is undeniable and it looks like the team will do more than just the bare minimum to keep the 7’4” French phenom.
Going to the Spurs will mean Victor gets to fill the otherwise big shoes Tim Duncan left. The legendary player won 5 NBA Championships for the Spurs qualifying them for the playoffs in all the 19 seasons he played for them.
The Spurs have failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2020 and Victor will be coming to revive that.
Risking to max out a player’s contract is such a big step a team might be willing to take and Spurs going to get him on a huge contract will be unexpected but possible. We understand that executives have seen what Victor possesses and would like to keep him for the long term.
Going by this, it looks like Victor might be playing for the Spurs for the foreseeable future and just like Tim Duncan, he might go on to play till his retirement. However, let us wait and see how the draft pans out, perhaps the Spurs might have other plans.
