Victor Wembanyama and His Massive Shoe Contract
2023 NBA top prospect Victor Wembanyama is a hotcake in the game when it comes to teams wanting to sign him and also companies wanting to give him a multimillion contract. This is no surprise given all the buzz surrounding the French phenom who has been the talk of the internet and the basketball community for quite some time now.
The NBA draft is just a few days around the corner set for June 22, 2023, and all eyes are on top prospects salivating at the idea of securing a spot in their ideal teams. Getting to good teams is nice but these young players will be looking to land endorsement deals and the actual competition begins when a major shoe company come knocking, presenting a lucrative deal that would be a determinant to a player’s future financially.
It goes without saying that companies will be swirling looking to ink a deal for Victor Wembanyama given his skills and abilities and the fame he has recently acquired make him an ideal candidate for a lucrative shoe deal. Rumours have it that Wembanyama was actually offered multiple “break the bank ‘ shoe deals some even crossing the $100 million threshold. The 7’4’’ centre has however turned down these offers and according to his French agent Bouna Ndiaye “Victor is rejecting some rich, million-dollar deals right now because he wants to focus on basketball.”
Now with such deals being thrown to a player, it’s a no-brainer for some who will jump on the idea of securing the bag early on. For Wemby who currently plays for Metropolitans 92 of the LNB Pro A, he has no rush in getting into too many contracts and wants his game to do the talking and doesn’t like the idea of getting to be known for having shoe deals. Basketball fans are speculating about what this deal means for the player, the label, and the industry as a whole, which has caused quite a stir.
Victor is dubbed the highest NBA draft prospect in over two decades, the last one who got so much attention was LeBron James back in 2003. Given his height advantage of standing at 7’4”, his 8’ wingspan and his general basketball talent, Wembanyama is expected to also take over the mantle of being the best in the league.
Looking to topple LeBron James as the rookie with the highest shoe deal ever Wembanyama is set to ink a million-dollar deal sooner or later. Before taking the court in an NBA game, his agent forecast that he will land a shoe contract worth more than $100 million! That is an insane number for a rookie and it will be the largest shoe deal in history if it gets to fruition.
LeBron James’ seven-year, $90 million deal with Nike is still the biggest shoe contract ever for a rookie and this came immediately after LeBron came out of high school in 2003. Zion Williamson came close when he signed a multiyear deal with Jordan Brand back in 2019 amounting to $ 75 million. Although Wembanyama has not yet secured the deal, if he does, it will put LeBron James’ record for most money earned in second place. This proves beyond a doubt that Victor is the game’s next big thing.
At the end of the day, signing a million-dollar shoe deal is an opportunity that a young prospect cannot afford to pass. It is an ideal opportunity to secure their financial future, build their brand, establish themselves as a cultural icon and establish their flair in the game. Wembanyama signing the deal will be an enormous deal both on and off the court.
