Dirk Nowitzki heaps of praise on Wembanyama’s daunting talent
Being a young talented basketball player is one thing but getting shoutouts from some of the NBA’s greats is another thing that rarely comes by. Victor Wembanyama has been able to match both and saying that the 19-year-old is good is an understatement.
Dubbed one of the two best prospects in the last 20 years, the only other one being LeBron James back in 2003 surely sums up how talented Victor is.
Wembanyama is physically capable of dominating on both ends of the court thanks to his height of 7’4″ and his around 8-foot wingspan. But what has distinguished him is his talent and general playing approach.
Despite his height, he has a quick first step and great ball-handling abilities that enable him to outrun the defence and make his shot. He can shoot beyond the three-point line with ease and fluidity.
Due to his length and mobility, he is also an excellent rim protector and a force to be reckoned with in passing lanes when playing defence.
Victor has been exceptional in everything he does which has garnered him admiration from the game’s legends. The latest legendary player is Dirk Nowitzki who had nothing but the best to say about Victor.
The Dallas Mavericks’ great Dirk Nowitzki is the chairman of the FIBA Players’ Commission and FIBA Central Board member who was attending the FIBA World Cup 2023 Draw in the Philippines where he spoke to FIBA.basketball about various issues before commending Wembanyama on his exceptional skills.
Dirk said, “You always think you’ve seen it all and then Wembanyama comes around, a 7-5 guy.
I watched a highlight the other day and he shot a step-back from three, and then a put-back. I mean, who does that? You got to be skilled, you gotta be quick to the ball. You got to be long. It’s scary how talented this kid is.”
Quite the praise from the German international who led the Dallas Mavericks to the 2011 NBA Championship. This comes amid Magic Johnson’s separate accolade to Wembanyama where he called him the best player.
These are incredible heights the French prodigy is soaring and it is just the tip of the iceberg as he is looking to take over the NBA.
Wembanyama has some relations with Dirk since they share services with Holger Geschwindner. Holger is a former professional basketball player from Germany who is most known for serving as Dirk Nowitzki’s longtime coach and mentor.
Wembanyama got a chance to work with him during his time in his camp. Wemby’s career has been greatly influenced by Holger, who thinks that Wemby suddenly gaining weight could seriously jeopardize it.
Nowitzki would marvel at the idea of Wembanyama ending up at his former team the Dallas Mavericks even though they only hold a 3% chance of drafting the 7’4” phenom.
The idea can be entertained and Wembanyama joining Mavericks will make a formidable trio featuring Kyrie Irving and Luka Dončić. But Dirk can stay hopeful as we all wait to see where Victor will land come June 22, 2023, on the NBA draft day.
