 Holidaygoers seeking sunnier climes have been urged to stay vigilant as the Irish government has issued travel warnings for popular holiday destinations due to heightened terrorism threats. The Department of Foreign Affairs has highlighted Spain and Turkey as areas of concern.

 In its advisory for Spain, the Department of Foreign Affairs emphasized the high threat level from terrorism, citing the Spanish Government’s national anti-terror alert remaining at level four since 2015. Irish citizens are urged to exercise heightened caution and increase their security awareness, particularly in places frequented by foreigners. The advisory underscores the importance of following instructions from local authorities and tour operators in the event of any security incident.

The warning for Turkey highlights the continued high threat from terrorism, with bomb attacks in major cities such as Istanbul and Ankara. The advisory particularly cautions against all travel within 10 kilometres of the border between Turkey and Syria and urges against non-essential travel to specific provinces. 

 The Department of Foreign Affairs stresses that terrorist attacks are unpredictable and indiscriminate by nature, emphasizing the need for a high degree of caution, especially in public places frequented by foreigners. Additionally, tourists are advised to avoid demonstrations and public gatherings in Turkey due to the potential for confrontations, with specific instructions to stay away from military and security installations.
