Dirk Nowitzki highlights what will derail Wembanyama’s career

You and I can testify that Wembanyama is in a league of his own and will surely take over the NBA when he finally settles in. This judgement might come about because we have never played in the NBA and we do not know all the dynamics involved in the league.

One prospect whose career has been under scrutiny for the past two years is Victor Wembanyama. With our judgement, Victor is already set to enter the league and it is only a matter of days before June 22, 2023, when the draft happens.

It is understandable to rate Victor highly given the alien-like features that make him stand out from your typical basketball player. The lad stands at a staggering 7’4”, has an 8-foot wingspan and his overall playing style sets him apart from normal players.

Despite his height, he has a quick first step and great ball-handling abilities that enable him to outrun the defence and make his shot. He can shoot beyond the three-point line with ease and fluidity.

Due to his length and mobility, he is also an excellent rim protector and a force to be reckoned with in passing lanes when playing defence.

Being a 19-year-old with all these features makes him the holy grail and teams are drooling at the idea of having him on their roster. Wembanyama has already earned admiration from legendary players like Magic Johnson, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kevin Durant and so many more.

The latest to heap praise on the French phenom is the Dallas Mavericks’ great Dirk Nowitzki. Speaking to FIBA.basketball during his visit to Manilla, Philippines for FIBA World Cup 2023 Draw, Dirk said, “You always think you’ve seen it all and then Wembanyama comes around, a 7-5 guy.

I watched a highlight the other day and he shot a step-back from three, and then a put-back. I mean, who does that? You got to be skilled, you gotta be quick to the ball. You got to be long. It’s scary how talented this kid is.”

Nowitzki’s complements however were followed with a major precaution that Wembanyama is supposed to adhere to if he does want to thrive in the game for long.

What could derail Wembanyama’s career?

Dirk said, ” Hopefully, he can stay healthy. That’s the only thing that can hold him back. I think everything else, I’ve heard he’s got the work ethic, he’s a smart kid, he wants to be great, he’s putting in the work and we’re all here to support him and see his full potential. We’re all rooting for him. Hopefully, his body holds up. Scary talent.”

Dirk suggests that the only thing that could hold Wembanyama back is not staying healthy. This comment is of major concern since Wembanyama’s build and longevity factors have been under frequent scrutiny.

Numerous experts doubt Wembanyama’s capability but the young lad has confidence in his talent and his camp is backing him on that.

Nevertheless, his unique mix of stature and skills has had NBA talent managers in a vice grip for years. Wembanyama appears to be a rare potential since he can score from anywhere without struggle and strain and also display outstanding shot-blocking capabilities.

On June 22, his future will be decided, and we are all eager to see how his career develops as he will be taking his game to the NBA.
