April 25 marks the 79th Festa Della Liberazione, as Rome and the whole of Italy mark the day on which the country was set free from the Nazi regime. Schools, offices, and several public places will be closed, marking the beginning of a long weekend as many people are contemplating making Friday, April 26, an off-work day.

The Romans will mark the liberation day with different ceremonies from as early as nine o’clock. The Italian president is set to lay a wreath on the tombs of the soldiers and people who died while fighting for the freedom of the country. The area around Piazza Venezia will be overcrowded with people thus affecting the public transport with traffic.

The morning wreath-laying ceremony will be followed by parades and marches as the soldiers march through the city center. This is the chance for student groups to march alongside veterans and the military as they celebrate the day of freedom.

The afternoons are followed by public addresses from the national leaders and the men in charge of the forces. There will also be open-air concerts that showcase the Roman tradition and contemporary music in the city.

Finally, the evening comes with a surprise, as many of the city’s landmarks, such as the Colosseum, are covered in glittering lights.

Despite many places closing, the museums and archaeological sites in the city will be open for free to the public.
