At an event on Monday, April 8 in Â鶹APP, the French tiremaker’s eponymous publication unveiled its list of the 189 best places to stay in the country, awarding them one, two, or three key emblems. It awarded 24 French hotels with “Three Keys” the highest rating in a new hotel rating system that will be implemented globally this year. 

The “key” system is similar to Michelin’s restaurant star system, with one key representing a “special” hotel, two keys for “exceptional,” and the coveted three keys awarded to “extraordinary” establishments.

Michelin named 38 Two Key Hotels and 127 One Key Hotels. Several palace hotels, including the Four Seasons George V. Chateau, were given three keys. The list also includes country accommodations, such as Lafauri-Peyraguey and Chateau de la Gaude, both of which received two stars, as well as several quirky boutique hotels, including Hôtel Le Ballu, La Fantaisie, and Les Bains. Michelin stated that its goal is to evaluate hotels beyond their basic amenities, focusing on restaurants, design, and service. It stated that it focuses on local character, and individuality, and provides a memorable guest experience.

“What really counts for us is the experience,” said Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, during an interview. “It has to be memorable and singular in a way that will give people a feel for local character.”

Visitors to the City of Light may find the “key” awards useful in separating options that appear similar from a distance. For example, the French government has been awarding top hotels the “palace” designation since 2010 to help customers identify hotels with both heritage and ample modern luxuries.
