A neighborhood staple on the South London food scene has sadly closed its doors.   a cherished vegan and social enterprise in Brixton, recently announced its permanent closure on social media. The news, shared in an Instagram post was met with an overwhelming fond reaction by the local community.

The post reads: ‘We’ve been compelled to take the incredibly tough decision to close Café Van Gogh, after nine years of trading as a unique vegan social enterprise, which always placed kindness and ethics at the heart of its business model.’

Reasons cited for its closure include rising costs, high energy prices and the adverse impact of remote working on the lunchtime economy. These challenges proved insurmountable for the café which could no longer afford to run.

More than just a coffee shop.

Cafe Van Gogh wasn’t just a place to grab a bite. It was a mission-driven establishment that provided vital paid employment opportunities for people with learning difficulties. It also had a Pay It Forward scheme, allowing clients to pay for a free hot drink for someone else in need.

The cafe’s team expressed their heartbreak in their closure announcement, acknowledging the deep impact on both their staff and loyal customers. They leave behind a legacy of kindness, delicious food, and a commitment to social responsibility.
