Winners and losers from the latest relegation battles
Everton were the major victors in the Premier League on a dramatic Bank Holiday Monday, defeating Brighton 5-1 at the Amex Stadium.
The Toffees scored five goals in a flurry on the South Coast to pull two points clear of the drop zone. Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dwight McNeil both scored twice, while Jason Steele also found the back of the net for Sean Dyche’s side in a crucial result at the foot of the table.
Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest defeated Southampton in a seven-goal thriller, putting Ruben Selles’ side on the verge of a return to the Championship for the first time in a decade. Forest won thanks to a brace from Taiwo Awoniyi and goals from Morgan Gibbs-White and Danilo earned Forest a 4-3 win at The City Ground.
Lyanco, Carlos Alcaraz, and James Ward-Southampton’s Prowse scored, but it wasn’t enough as Selles’ side suffered their sixth defeat in seven games. Saints, who are now eight points adrift of safety, will be relegated regardless of other results if they fail to beat Fulham.
Forest joined Everton as the two winners from Monday’s games, giving them a significant boost in their chase for safety. They are three points above the relegation zone, but their next three games of the season are against Chelsea, Arsenal, and Crystal Palace – perhaps the most difficult run out of the relegation battle.
Leicester, on the other hand, did not have a successful day. The Foxes suffered a humiliating 5-3 defeat against mid-table Fulham, dropping them into the dreaded relegation zone. Willian, Carlos Vinicius, and Tom Cairney’s double put the Whites up four goals to one.
Harvey Barnes pulled one back for Dean Smith’s men before Willian grabbed his second to seal the victory. Barnes scored again, and James Maddison converted a penalty to give Leicester hope at the end, but it was too little, too late to save the game.
The Foxes haven’t kept a top-flight clean sheet since November and are now two points from safety, with three challenging games remaining before the season ends. Leicester’s remaining games are against Liverpool, Newcastle, and West Ham.
Following their 2-1 defeat against Manchester City, Leeds were the only team in the bottom five not to play on Monday. Despite Rodrigo’s late strike, Sam Allardyce’s first game back in charge in two years failed to produce any points at the Etihad Stadium. They will join Leicester and Southampton as the weekend’s three losers.
