Prague’s streets will come alive with the vibrant colours and sounds of global folk traditions this July. The 19th annual Prague Folklore Days, set to take place from July 18 to 21, 2024, is expected to draw over 1,000 performers from around the world. It is the largest event of its kind in Central Europe. The aim is to preserve and showcase diverse cultural heritage through dance, music, and traditional costumes.

A Feast for the Senses

Visitors to Prague during the four-day festival will be treated to a spectacular display of folk art. Performances will be held on outdoor stages throughout the city center. In the programme will be dance ensembles, singing groups and musicians from Europe, Africa and Asia.

“The festival is a unique opportunity to experience the richness of global folk traditions in one place,” said Jana Novotna, the event organiser. “From vibrant African dances to intricate European folk steps, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”

More Than Just Dance

While dance takes center stage, the Prague Folklore Days offers much more. Attendees can admire elaborate traditional costumes, many of which have been passed down through generations. Wedding attire to everyday workwear will be displayed to provide a glimpse into the daily lives of different cultures.

Parade Highlights Festival’s Finale

The festival will culminate in a grand parade through Prague’s Old Town. This colourful procession will feature all participating ensembles. Spectators will see the full range of costumes and performances in one spectacular display.

“We want everyone to have the chance to experience these rich cultural traditions,” Novotna explained. “By keeping the event free, we hope to attract a diverse audience.”

Both residents and visitors can look forward to a lively and educational experience. The Prague Folklore Days promises to be a highlight of the summer season. Make time for a unique blend of entertainment and cultural exchange.
