June is here, and pride celebration spirit is already in the air. While colorful pride parades may be a good indicator of friendly LGBTQ+ policies, there are more factors to consider especially for travelers. To identify some of these, has released the 16th edition of its annual index, the Rainbow Map. The index analyzes the most welcoming destinations for LGBTQ+ travelers, based on seven categories. These are equality and non-discrimination, hate crime and hate speech, family, legal gender recognition, space in civil society, intersex bodily integrity, and asylum.
According to Portugal makes the list at number 10 as one of the most welcoming countries in Europe. It had an average compliance score of 67.14% after consideration of the various categories. Notably, it had the highest compliance in civil society space, with a 6/6. The rest scored as follows; equality and non-discrimination (12/25), family (9/11), hate crime and hate speech (4/8), legal gender recognition (11/15), intersex bodily integrity (1/4), and asylum (4/6). Malta takes top place for the 9th time in a row, with Iceland and Belgium following closely at second and third place respectively. Spain, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Luxembourg, Norway and Portugal conclude the top ten countries in that order. On the other end, Russia leads in the least welcoming countries in Europe for the LGBTQ+ community.
