April 21 is a special day in Rome’s history as it commemorates the city’s birthday.  On this day, another natural phenomenon makes it very special: the Dies Natalis. This is an extraordinary natural occurrence that happens at the Pantheon.

The Pantheon has a huge hole in the roof called the oculus, which facilitates the Dies Natalis. On April 21, huge rays of the sun shine through the oculus. The beam of light falls perfectly on the temple’s floor, lighting up the temple. The giant spotlight makes Rome’s birthday even more special to the Romans.

This year’s Dies Natalis falls on the Sunday of April 21 as Romans celebrate the 2777th birthday since the city was founded.

Since the Dies Natalis is not an actual event, there are no tickets or limits for the attendees. Anyone who happens to be visiting the Pantheon is free to witness the special light on this special day.

What makes the event so special? This fascinating event is special because it occurs only once a year, and many people are drawn to the Pantheon to celebrate the city’s birthday.

The Culture Ministry in Rome and Italy has over the years adopted a culture of recording the phenomenon and showing it to the whole world. Join Rome as they celebrate this special day in style and make memories.
