Newcastle secure a top-four finish after a Draw against Leceister
They stumbled over the finish line, dominating despite Leicester’s stifling. The hardest points to win are always the last few.
Eddie Howe’s team earned the crucial point to guarantee a top-four finish and a spot in the Champions League for the upcoming season. The rigors of the actual game had been forgotten by the time Newcastle’s stars were leading a lap of honor in front of their adoring supporters. It was an homage to video games that were much more powerful and thrilling than this one.
Despite dominating and hitting the woodwork three times, Newcastle was unable to score the winning goal. They had 81 percent of the possession and 23 shots.
Only Tim Castagne’s outstanding Nicky Pope save in stoppage time allowed them to succeed. Under Sir Bobby Robson, Newcastle last placed in the top four in May 2002. Additionally, it has been 11 years since they last made it to Europe, placing fifth in Alan Pardew’s 2012 season.
It completes a historic turnaround that began in October 2021, when Mike Ashley sold out to a partnership led by Amanda Staveley and the Saudi PIF.
Those were bleak times, with Steve Bruce’s team just having three points after seven games and sitting in 19th place in the league.
It is amazing how Eddie Howe was able to shape a top-four team 19 months later. It is an outstanding accomplishment. Leicester is most likely heading in the opposite direction to the Geordies.
If they lose to West Ham this Saturday, they would be relegated after nine seasons in the Premier League, including their miraculous title win and an FA Cup victory just two seasons ago.
City put up a very strong effort, twice having shots stopped by the woodwork in the first half as they played a suffocating, deep-lying defense with five defenders and three stacked midfielders.
However, given the lack of adventure, City had little opportunity of scoring. After 64 minutes, they earned their first corner.
With Joelinton limping out of warm-up and local lad Elliot Anderson being called up to start five minutes before kickoff, the Toon had their own last-minute injury switch.
It was flat, despite the build-up’s electrifying atmosphere. Bruno Guimaraes”studs above the knee’ tackle on Boubakary Soumare was extremely fortunate not to result in a foul. VAR reviewed it, but Andre Marriner’s decision to display a yellow remained the same.
While Leicester couldn’t get close to the home goal, Miggy Almiron and Anderson both struck shots that David Iverson stopped.
After 40 minutes, Callum Wilson hit the post and then attempted to score with a header, but Wilfred Ndidi successfully cleared the goal line.
After Fab Schar’s head down, Almiron struck the post two minutes later, and from the rebound, Alexander Isak missed the target.
Following a series of missed opportunities, Wilson got a fantastic opportunity at the back post from a corner from Kieran Tripper but headed over.
Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the chairman of Newcastle and the head of PIF and LIV golf, received a standing ovation from the home crowd as he participated in a shooting game with co-owners Jamie Reuben and Mehrdad Ghodoussi during halftime.
The most prominent non-royal businessman in Saudi Arabia was dressed in a black and white striped suit.
Iverson made a spectacular save on Isak’s top-corner shot after the break after Almiron had set him up.
After Wout Faes flicked Trippier’s corner, Guimaraes headed from a yard away against the post in an incredible mistake.
