In a recent press release, the Barcelona City Council revealed that Park Güell welcomed an astonishing 4.4 million visitors in 2023, marking a six percent increase from the previous year.

Interestingly, close to 500,000 of these visitors were residents of Barcelona, who accessed the park using the neighborhood card available to locals.

However, the majority of visitors hailed from abroad, with a significant portion ranging in age from 25 to 34 years old.

While many visitors flock to Park Güell to marvel at the architectural genius of its designer, Antoni Gaudí, a quarter of them consider it an iconic space that embodies the essence of the Catalan capital.

To preserve this heritage site and promote sustainable tourism, the park has implemented a maximum capacity of 4.5 million visitors per year, ensuring a harmonious coexistence with the surrounding neighborhood and nearby schools.

Before 2020, access was regulated solely for the monument zone of Park Güell. However, since then, the entire park has adopted controlled access measures to maintain its integrity and enhance the visitor experience.

Remarkably, Barcelona’s residents accounted for half a million of the park’s visitors in 2023, marking a 37 percent increase compared to the previous year.

This statistic underscores the enduring appeal of Gaudí’s work among locals and tourists alike.

As the numbers continue to soar, the Barcelona City Council may need to reevaluate the 4.5 million visitor threshold in the future. The allure of Park Güell is undeniable, and Gaudí’s masterpiece will continue to captivate generations to come.
